I appologize for being new offhand. I have read around this site for about an hour, which in my experience is sufficient to get a general base of things. However, I still feel like a shmuck!

OK....burning ps2 games...I need this in dumb-person terms, as I am not a techie, or computer gifted.
I have: DVD shrink/DVD decryptor/DVD burner I would like to copy my game Kingdom Hearts so that I have a backup copy. Do I need anything else? I read a lot about swap magick, and other such things. I understand how a slide card might work, as well as mod chips, but I do not want to tear open my ps2...if I could I would rather figure out how to make a 'free' boot disk, or use none at all...is it just as simple as copying it with dvd decryptor?

I appreciate your understanding of my situation of being 'not smart' and new here. Please let me know if I have a prayer for this or not!

Thank you so much for your time!

Sorry mate, not a chance of making a free boot disc.. they just don't work... you need to have some form of case mod, whether it be a fliptop(not standard one that come on the slim),slidecard, ghost switch/magic switches etc AND the swap magic discs in order to be able to play backed up games... you can make a slidecard yourself, there are a few tutorials of how to do that floating around on the board (and in the stickies).. but there's just no way around having to pay for the boot discs (around £15 here in the UK)

To get a fliptop case and the swap magic disc set costs around £30 here in the UK.. I would imagine it's around the same price ($42?) or even less in your country of residence.. so it's not expensive compared to having to buy another copy of a game because it got scratched up really badly or something.

Anyway, hope that helped clear it up for you..

Thank you very much for such a quick response.

OK...so then i will NEED a boot disk. Is there any recomendations for a site or getting one that is cheaper, and works better? Also...can boot disks be copied? Thanks again for helping me out!

I appologize for the double post..but just to make a side note--I have a standard regular old fashioned ps2..nothing fancy, but I don't want to tear it apart, so the boot disk is I THINK[/B] the best way to go.

Yes, boot discs can be copied .. but once they are copied they are no longer boot discs, as only the originals have a code embedded into the burst cutting area of the disc that dvd writers can't copy... so you need an original boot disc!!!

If it were possible to play burnt games without anything special, or possible to copy boot discs, nobody would buy them.

Asking how to play/boot PS2 backed up games is like asking how can I watch my DVD movies without a standalone dvd player, or it's like how can I burn PS2 games or dvd movies without a dvd burner.

The answer is you NEED a modchip, swap magic disc, fliptop/slide card/slide tool, etc. in order to play your PS2 backed up games.

OK...so I get this SO FAR BUT..........Say I have a burned game (we'll assume I can burn the game with dvd decryptor)

Next step is having a boot disc....say I get swap magic

Do I need anything else?

I hear about this slide card thing, which makes me think the whole playing burned backup copies will be impossible for someone without some previous experience, or someone that can show me how to do it. Also...I DON'T want to modify my ps2...and it is not a 'slim' or whatever...just a normal regular off the line old ps2. Not to play idiot again, but can someone give me the run around and let me know the whole playing burned games as if I were a dummy trying to screw in a lightbulb.

this is what I got so far:
1. insert swap magic (unless i can get something better..please let me know!)
2. press eject on ps2 and take out swap magic
3. replace with burned game and press close button
4. press X on controller and game starts.

Is this right, or am I missing something here? Also...in the case of swap magic, does it matter what version of the disc I get?

Thanks for all the help..it is GREATLY appreciated!

If you decided to go with Swap Magic 3.6 Plus and Fliptop, then below is the instructions on how to boot your burned PS2 games.

<> power up your PS2 console
<> Eject tray and put in your Swap Magic DVD disc and close tray
<> wait 5 seconds until you get to the loading/booting menu
<> open up from Fliptop cover (top) and take out Swap Magic dvd disc
<> put in your PS2 backups from Fliptop (top) and close Fliptop
<> press X to boot

That's it... it's only roughly 1 minute, easy as sippin' on a Corona. Enjoy it!!

Listen mate this is how you do it!

Fist off stick with swap magic, think the newest version is 3.6 which is what i use! it keeps things simple!

If you have the old bulky ps2, and u dont wana open ur ps2 up, then u will need to attach a "slide card" to the front of ur drive to manually pull it open the drive when swap magic disc tells u to insert ur game!! u then pull the drive open, take the swap magic disc out, put ur backup in and push it shut, then press X (pressing the eject button will make the ps2 want the boot up code again which isnt on the backups which is why u need to use swap magic cd and slide as it has the codes on it)

thats just the mod side of it!

when it comes to copying the actuall game, nero will do fine! or dvd decrypter or alchol %120! what ever! just do a straight dvd copy!

The tricky side comes to when u wana play ur games online!

For now just get used to just playing ur back ups till ur ready!

the are plenty of site that give u step by step instruction and its not as hard as it sounds! if i can do it!

I am no gienus! as i cant even spell mate!

Hope this helps budy!

Basically, the answer is no you cannot keep it "stock"... it has to be modified in some way. The simplest modification would probably be the slide-card, but it's also the trickiest to get the hang of. It still requires you to take the face-plate off the front of the eject tray which isn't a big deal in itself though.
If you're not keen on messing with it, why not get someone else to do it for you? then you could have a modchip(best option) or a fliptop installed if you don't mind paying a few extra dollars?

I've also heard of an 'external' mod chip that plugs in via the usb port...is this a better option for the ps2 (and yes I have the old bulky one).

USB extreme isn't an external modchip, it's an external hard drive utility.. to boot a usb hard drive through your ps2 usb port.

I've never heard of an external modchip, there's a no-solder modchip..
an external modchip could be possible I guess, but would still need to be connected to your existing modchip I would imagine.. so still have to open the case.
