It seems like all of a sudden there is a surge of people with bad TY media. I wonder if Supermediastore would let me return this batch? I don't want this crap.

You should definitely try to return them. Supermediastore.com is very reputable. I and several other people have ordered from there with good results. I bought the 8x TY DVD-R's and haven't had any issues. I've backed up 115 PS2 games on TY's with 0 coasters. If you did get some fakes, supermediastore.com probably got ripped off as well. I don't think they'd knowingly pass along fakes. They're highly rated on just about every media review I've ever seen. Maybe your burners don't like 4x DVD-R's or don't work with them. Different Burners are more compatible with different media. This is not a common problem at all. Is everybody doing the following?

1. Make sure your firmware is up to date: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

2. Make sure your burner is in DMA mode: http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm

3. Shut down all programs running in the background, I.E. Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, or MSN Messeger.

4. Use quality media. This goes without saying. The problems reported in this thread don't accurately reflect the all around performance of TY's. Unfortunately you're in the minority of people who've had issues with TY.

5. Use quality DVD Burning software like DVD Decrypter, Alcohol 120%, Nero, or ImgBurn.

6. Defrag your Hard Drive. Fragmented files can affected burn quality.

Check here for DVD Burner reviews and media compatibility scans:
http://cdrlabs.com/

If you've done all that and still have bad results, then there isn't much you can do. Unfortunately, you probably got a bad batch of TY's or they're not compatible with your burners. I will continue to recommend TY's. Their overall performance is excellent. Until the burden of proof changes, I see no reason to change my recommendation.

Lastly here are some places locally you may be able to find good media.

Verbatim's: You can find them at Sam's Club. I've heard they're $15 for a 50 pack.

Maxell's: You can find Maxell's at CompUSA or Office Depot that are made in Japan. The "Made in Japan" on the label is the key. These are excellent quality. It's a crap shoot with the ones made in Taiwan.

Taiyo Yuden: I know you may never want to try them again, it's understandable. But if you do, the Sony DVD+R's that are made in Japan are TY's. Once again the "Made in Japan" on the label is the key. Good Luck all. I hope you all get your burning probs resolved. Cheers!

1) I updated it less than a couple of weeks ago.
2) Pretty sure it is.
3) Yeah everything was closed while burning.
5) I've used both DVD decrypter and Alcohol 120% several times.
6) Fresh format and install of Windows.

Also, I ran quality scans and am getting some red showing, 50's 60's and 70's scoring over a few scans.

7) Oh yeah this really sucks and makes me one sad panda. I've been at this for more than two weeks now. ;(

I honestly don't know why some of you people keep saying that it's the media -- the thing is if it's really genuine YUDEN media with these inner hub id code as follow, then it is AUTHENTIC/REAL Taiyo Yuden, NOT FAKE.

4X DVD-R, the coding follows this format: GD00XXXX (XXXX = numbers)
8X DVD-R, the coding follows this format: GG00XXXX (XXXX = numbers)
8X DVD+R, the coding follows this format: TG00XXXX (XXXX = numbers)

I've used tons (hundreds and hundreds from www.supermediastore.com) and have used some locally (the FUJI 8X DVD+R MIJ aka YUDEN000T02) and I've never made any coaster burning at 4X for PS2 games or 4X - 8X for dvd movies. So far, all of my backups (both dvd movies & PS2 games) are playing flawlessly.

The odds are, if it's GENUINE Taiyo Yuden, then there is something wrong that you did and probably didn't noticed (ie firmware's not up-to-date, burned it the wrong way, burned too fast, burned too slow, games needs rebuild, etc.)

*NOTE: keep in mind that firmware is the most important role when it comes to burning, regardless if it's PS2 games or dvd movies or it doesn't matter how high quality is the media made of. If your firmware is out-of-dated, then the chances are, you're more than likely to create a "coasters". Meaning your burner can't "recognize" the MID from the new media you're getting and it won't write/burn properly.

*NOTE: little things to add here, when burning PS2 games or dvd movies, don't multi-task, keep your RAM as much as possible, run scan disk to clean all your temp files, defrag your hard drive daily, disconnected from the net, shutdown/disable any unnecessary running programs such as Anti-Virus, programs that runs in the background, etc.

Good luck!!

Like I said, if you've done all that there isn't a lot you can do. Make sure your burner is in DMA mode. Refer to the link I posted for info on that. In your case I feel bad, Ppills, I know I'm at least one of the people who recommended TY's and supermediastore.com to you. I've had and talked to ton's of people who have great experiences with Taiyo Yuden's and sms.com. I would never knowingly pass along BS info. With those quality scores, I'm almost certain you got a bad batch. Even though my burner doesn't support PIF scans, my quality scores are all excellent (high 90's or better). I've never had any problems with TY. Even TY's aren't perfect. There will be bad batches of all media. Try some of the other brands of quality media I posted that you can get locally. Sorry for the inconvienence.

@Tokijin - It's all right. Not your fault.

@alkohol - My media is 4x and has a code of GG000077. Note that your post says it starts with GD.....

This is IMPOSSIBLE because it's 4X only, unless it's FAKE.

Normally I'd agree you with you Alky. But based on the quality scores he's gotten, I think they're fakes or just a defective batch. I can't verify it's not user error, but my instincts tell me this time it isn't. I think these people just had some bad luck. I could be wrong and you certainly know more about media than I do, but that's my two cents. Peace.

Unfortunately you just got shite media. Those scans confirm it, at least to me. The numbers don't lie. Contact supermediastore.com and tell them you got a bad batch or fakes. If they're as reputable as I hope they are, they'll refund your money or exchange them with some TY's that work fine. If you had gotten a good batch like most of us did, you'd be content. Or you could ask for some Verbatims lol. Peace.

Are you trying to burn at 4x on those 4x media? I thought you had 8x media?

Anyway, if it's 4x media, burn at 2x or 1x on those discs and see how you get on... definitely check to see if your firmware is up to date too.

Paddy isn't that the same burner you have? It looks like it from this pic you posted in your guide:

If it is, his firmware definitely isn't up to date. If so that could definitely be the problem.

Yeah, good catch Tokijin... I did notice in another post of this guy, but to be honest it's hard keeping up now as I have seen so many posts from him... no offense ppills

My NEC drive worked fine with whatever I chucked at it with any firmware I used to be honest.. but it can't hurt to update it.. it's easy as hell with the NEC... They now have version 3.06<----[edited] for this drive and I updated it around 2 weeks ago. It could improve compatability with the discs he's using.. but I think there's a problem somewhere else that is getting missed out somehow... if his is version 3.04<----[edited] then it's not been updated for quite some time as I was running ver 3.05<----[edited] for about 3 months or more I think.

[edit] edited out the incorrect numbers I stated.. i'm too tired, gonna have a night off tonight and recharge. Been on my computer doing stuff now for nearly 5 days straight with only about 4-5 hours rest/sleep each night. I'll catch up on this thread tomorrow.

Paddymail, please don't tell me you just said 1.06 is the latest version. We do have the same exact drive right? A NEC ND-3520a?
When I first bought this drive more than 1 year ago, if I remembered correctly, it initially came with version 1.06. Several months after I had it, I upgraded to version 1.24 for one reason or another, I don't quite remember.
Now about week ago or so, I was having problems running Nero CD-DVD speed when I had version 1.24. Someone told me it was probably my firmware that wasn't up to date. So someone linked me to version 3.04 and I did indeed update to 3.04. Nero CD-DVD speed works now after the update.

How could you have version 1.06 but the screenshot Tokijin posted says 3.06?

Another thing that bothers me: it seems it was such a huge firmware jump from my 1.24 to 3.04. It was only a few months that I hadn't updated it, and besides, there wasn't even any version 2.xx to be seen anywhere, as far as I have known. It makes me think it wasn't even the correct firmware for me drive.

How sure are you firmware is the problem? I mean i'm getting good flawless burns if I burn audio cd's, data dvd's, dvd-videos, and everything else. I'm getting 'successful' burns when I burn PS2 games, I just can't get them to be read be read by my PS2.

Oh and another thing, these TY media are indeed labeled 4x, but I think it let's me burn them at at least 8x.... i've tried to burn already at 2.4x I believe, once, it still didn't solve the problem.

I will try again just to be sure.

Please get back to me.

Sorry I meant 3.06 as in my guide... I will update my last post it was just a mis-type by me as I was thinking of something else at the time, sorry!!

Yours is 3.04 ... should be 3.06, not sure how you managed to get 1.24 as according to the firmware page they only have these versions

edited my other thread that I posted earlier...

Hey ppills - try burning those discs at 2x or even 1x with nero(if you have it), just to see if that works... the reason I'm suggesting nero is because for me it has more control over the burning speed compared to dvd decrypter.. use it in "burn image to disc" mode.

let me know how you get on with that? and you may want to enable DMA and other stuff on your computer settings again now that you re-installed win2000 pro instead of winxp.. you'd have been better off waiting a while to be honest, but what's done is done.

good luck with it.. I wanna get you sorted out with this and end this thread now :)

@paddymail

As much as I love DVD Decrypter (I still got love for DVD Decrypter for burning the MDS file), but for some reason I find it that I have more control with Nero Burning Rom and Nero Express. Yes, both Nero Express and Nero Burning Rom can burn any ISO image smoothly now-a-days. Even Nero automatically "book type" any of my DVD+R into DVD-ROM flawlessly, whereas I have to go inside DVD Decrypter and change it in prior to the burning process.

I just finished updating my firmware to 3.06, restarted, installed full version of nero 6.6.0.16, restarted, opened up Nero, chose 'burn image', and tried to burn a 2 GB game at 2x (lowest it would let me go), still nothing.
At this point, it seems like nothing is going to work. Guess I will try again with DVD Decrypter since I had just updated my firmware to 3.06.

Ya, it looks legit, but they sent me the dvd box. It has all the fixings for the DVD's, but says right one the box, made in taiwan, not Made in Japan...
Also, All my burns work perfectly with inferior grade Princo discs, but not a single burn with these supposed TY discs...
I feel that if they are Original TY discs, I should have more than 0 out of about 10 good burns...
So far, not a single good burn with them...
I reordered ne wones from SupermediaStore, I had gotten my old ones from Allmedia outlet.
Thanks for the help, this is a good thread for learning about the disc quality...

@Alkohol, yeah that's what I was saying... I know I regularly tell people to use DVD Decrypter to burn the mds, bur personally as I said in my other post, I prefer Nero... I can get along with decrypter, but you have to change stuff all the time.. so I usually just leave it in file mode for ripping dvd's or iso read mode for the games and burn with nero's "burn image to disc".. never had any problems with that.. and it only cost me £1.50 about a year ago(OEM) and updated for free to all the latest versions of engines etc.. only "express", but it works flawlessly.. good deal huh?

Off topic here - but had to use dvdfab decrypter for the first time today.. "the longest yard" had sony ripguard I think.. it would rip with DVD Decrypter, but when you open shrink in re-author mode it doesn't show the movie files.. and if you try to open in full disc mode, you get the "invalid navigation structure" popup. Was a bit p***ed off because I then had to rip it again, but at least it was no bother other than that. No problems with "war of the worlds" or "the wedding crashers" at all with DVD Decrypter and shrink.

Ok I emailed the RMA dept of supermediastore.com. I explained my problem to the guy and he said they do not carry fake Taiyo Yuden media, which I do believe. So it is most likely a bad batch because the scans do not lie. He then asked for my yahoo order number, and I gave it to him. Then he sent a retarded auto-generated RMA email. So that's where I stand right now. I will probably send it off tomorrow sometime.

This is a really weird problem... does your burner burn other stuff ok? like movies, data etc?

Because the only other thing I can think of at the moment is maybe your drive's dirty/dusty or the laser is on the way out.
