well my drive burns movies and audio cd's fine. It also burns PS2 games perfectly on TDK DVD-R 8x but I dont know what to do with the remaining Taiyo Yuden Disks as I did pay a total of $40 for them and only about 4 or 5 games worked out of about 50 disks. I might just use them for movies. But is there anything else I can do to try to solve this problem?. Nero wont even let my run a disk quality test. It says error inializing program and it only says Blank DVD-R but when i click on cd/dvd info it says all the info:
Manufacturer : TYG02
Code : -
Disc Type : DVD-R
Usage : General
Recording Layer : -
Recording Speed : 4 X - 8 X
Capacity : 4.38 GB

I'd reread this thread and make sure you've done everything everybody suggested. Ppills firmware wasn't up to date. Most likely there's something you're missing as well. Now in his case it didn't end up mattering. You should contact sms as he did and I'm sure they'll take em back. I think Ochm's razor applies here: The simplest explanation is usually the correct one. To me the simplest of explanation is they got a bad batch of TY's. It happens. SMS will exchange them, and chances are they'll get a new batch of TY's that work perfectly. Keep us posted on your progress.

well, do what i would do. Just use them for movies and go out and buy some TDK DVD's that seemed to work for you.
When you find a brand that works every time then stick to
it like glue.
I started with TDK and they worked good. Then moved on to
Philips 8X DVD-R which worked every time, so even though i know
there may be better discs out there like Taiyo Yuden, there is no
reason to switch. The Philips work for my movies, Xbox, and
PS2 games. Any discs i bought that did not work well for games i
back movies up on as they are not nearly as picky about media.

Yeah, I agree with Steimy.. although Taiyo yudens are really really good media.. if things are working for you with other decent brand media then there's no reason to change... I use Ritek g05 discs mostly to back up my games.. and they have given me around 150 ps2 games with no problems at all... sometimes I use verbatims with Taiyo yuden dye too, but only on a really good game... to be honest with some of the games I've had I wished I hadn't bothered backing it up at all.. but had already done it as soon as I got home from the shops... still not bad though.. I found out the game was crap.. so took it back to the shop and got a different one :) - I threw the backup away too by the way!!!

Rule of thumb to anything really is "if it ain't broke don't try and fix it" as you're wasting your time.

I recently ordered the same 8x TY DVD-R hub printables from supermediastore.com and have been having problems with them as well. I'm trying to play a backup of NBA Street V3, burnt at 4x on my Pioneer DVR-106D, but it has horrible errors with it. Music will skip horribly and the game freezes for long periods of time as the PS2 struggles to read the disc. I realized the game needs a patch to work with Swap Magic, but even after applying that and burning that image, it is no good.

After seeing this thread I thought it might have something to do with the media I got, but the tests I ran on DVDInfoPro possibly show otherwise.

The following are results from the aforementioned burn of NBA Street Vol 3.

This, however, is the result of another game, NBA 2k6 (tell I like basketball yet?), burnt 4x about a month ago on the same burner onto a Ritek G04. This backup works flawlessly on my PS2! Does this mean my burner is going? How can I tell?

Is your firmware up to date? Neither of those scans is very good. The printable DVD's usually are of a little lower quality than not printable (something to with the label), but a 75 on a Taiyo Yuden is bad regardless. The other one is horrible, I'm surprised it plays at all. A couple people have reported their printable Riteks going to hell in a handbasket rather quickly, for unknown reasons. Make sure your firmware is up to date and that your burner is in DMA Mode.

92. Q. What is firmware and why should I care?
A. Firmware as defined by AD:
Sort of a "operating system of the hardware", an embedded instruction set built-in or flashed into a hardware equipment, such as a router, CDR drive, DVD-ROM drive, washing machine, etc.
Newer Firmware can unlock new features that are sealed on certain DVD Burners like booktyping, or simply enhance your existing Burner by improving burn quality and media compatiblility. Keeping your Firmware up to date is essential to ensure quality burns and maximum functionality from your DVD Burner. When flashing your burner with new Firmware, be very careful. Make sure you shut down all programs running in the background, the DVD-ROM drive is empty, and you follow all the directions included in the Firmware download exactly. A bad flash can fry your DVD Burner. Proceed with caution. You can find all the Firmware you'll ever need here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

I guess I break the newbie mold by actually reading the FAQs before posting, as I've already tried your suggestions. I downloaded the latest firmware from Pioneer's site and double checked that my drives are in DMA mode. I got the impression from my test results that my Riteks shouldn't be playable, but they are working perfectly. I've tried different game modes, arenas, teams.. you name it! Despite everything I throw at it, I can't get my game to stop working. :P So to me, that raises a red flag that it might be my drive that's the problem as I wouldn't expect a PS2 to read a disc better than a DVD burner under normal circumstances. On a side note, the Riteks aren't printables (only got my R220 yesterday), but like I said they work anyway so I think that's irrelevant at this point.

To sum it up, the Riteks were burned 1-2 months ago and work flawlessly while the TYs were burned yesterday and barely work at all. Both were burned using the same method and both yield bad test results in the drive they were produced on. My original thought was that I got a bad batch of TYs like the original poster, but now I'm thinking it's possible that my drive has kicked the bucket. How can I be sure either way?

Well you're jumping the gun. CRC and PI/PO scans are a barometer for how your disc will play, not an absolute garuntee. Just because a disc grades out at 99 doesn't mean it'll play, just like a 10 quality score doesn't mean it'll skip horribly. DVDInfoPro, Nero CD/DVD Speed, and K-probe scans are approximations, that's all. Maybe Ritek and Taiyo Yuden media are just not real compatible with your burner. Have you had any issues playing movies or anything else? Do you have a bunch of programs running in the background when burning?

Taiyo Yuden 4x in my opinion were the best which worked FLAWLESSLY for me. If you can find the 4x and burn at 1x they will be smooth. However, meritline seems to have a sale for 4x taiyo yudens (I believe a pack of 100 for like 26 bucks or something). I purchased them, but they are really selling 8x's. So in otherwords if you buy 4x Taiyo's from Meritline as of right now, you'll be getting 8x's instead. Kinda sucks cause I ordered 200 and none of my games work as smoothly when burning at 4x. 1x is the way to go all the way. Sure it takes a lot longer, but the gameplay experience will be better in the end.

I have some fake TYG02 from Meritline although they weren't sold as TY. They were sold as Meritline thermal printable 8X -R. I don't use thermal printable, but a friend ordered these by mistake and gave them to me. Sometimes they burn good, sometimes not. They do not have the correct numbers around the hub. Fortunately I havevn't personally received any. All of the TYG02 I have received from Supermediastore.com have been genuine and worked fine.

Hey ForknDave ventures into the PS2 section lol, cheers buddy! I prefer the 8x Taiyo Yuden's myself, but the 4x ones work fine too. It's really just a matter of user preference, media compatibility, and up to date firmware. For me 1x is painfully slow, so I burn at 4x with good results. Never had issues with my games on my modded PS2.

I guess all of my YUDEN are genuine. Again, I've never had any issues regardless if I'm burning dvd movies or PS2 games. So far all of them worked flawlessly.

I to bought 200 ty's from sms.com, I always used memorex, philips, maxell, fuji all with at least 98% success rate, after joining AD I always read that these ty's were suppose to be the best, so I bought them, first none would work period, I tought I got ripped, I have an old philips dvdrw 6002 burner, everybody gave me a firmware site for an update, I did, the ty's work fine now, I also bought a batch of 50 sony disc's from bestbuy, yes it did say from japan, still none of those work, first time I ever got ripped, no matter I got plenty of ty's now. I also bought from sms.com a pack of 12 disc's from differnt manufacturers, they called it a tryout pack, all you have to do is just pay for S&H, the 12 disc's are free.
And believe it or not I still use my old trusty dvdxcopy from 321 studios, I also use dvdxplat. and videovault from xcopy software, to this day I can still burn anything except Madigaskar, and the Cave, no matter what I do I cant even get on first base, just gave up, I think there sony products, if thats what is gonna keep coming from here on in than both my softwares will be obsolete.
I did review options by some poeple that burn those succesfully using Nero etc.just confused the hell out of me. My son had a party here one day with a bunch of his buddies, I showed them those burning methods, they laughed, said it would take them a month to explain to me, ok, whatever.
Anyway, like many people here explained, if you are having success with other brands keep using them, I still use my Memorex's I have left and they still work great even tough many people here say they suck, I also saw how people here use that Nero to anylize the quality of disc's while burning, never really understood what that was about anyway, I read an intersting article on another site about that, the guy called then scanners, he said how they love to tinker with that, he also said whatever you see on those charts the probabilty that your naked eye will see it is very nill, I tried viewing a burn with e.g. memorex than a ty, the guy was right, I cant tell no differnce, and I still use two disc's to burn cause I can tell the differnce between a compressed disc or not, so my eyesight is still ok I presume, my main concern now is that these ty's and hope that they will last longer than my other disc's, if that will be the case, than I'm extremly happy with my purchase, and will continue to by ty's as long as these peole at AD say there ok, I've never seen anybody at AD steer anybody wrong, I hope you solve your problem, I know how frustrating that can be.

Yeah I can understand your frustration, but this isn't a common problem with TY's. I've seen a lot more problems with Verb's than TY's. Either it's user error, they were fakes, or just a bad batch of TY's. This is not the norm. TY's and sms.com are top notch all the way.

What about the Verbatim-Tuiyo Yuden discs?
(These one's here - http://www.svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=221)

Was thinking of getting some, they look genuine anyway, didn't really think Verbatim Tuiyo Yuden discs sounded authentic :P But apparently they are so are they any good?

Plus they have the same media code as the 8x TYs, TYG02. I don't think they're available outside of the U.K. Good karma to have the TYG02 media code lol.

Yep, I use those verb TY's too... mostly for movies that I really want a good burn on... and a few games. Modt of the time I use these though Mik
http://www.svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=219 Never had a problem with these for my games on my NEC ND3520AW with latest (3.06) firmware.
It only works out a bit cheaper though than the Verbs.. about £3 per 50 cheaper.
I'm gonna try some authentic TY's next http://www.svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=228

See ya

Howdy all.
I am pretty new to responding, but have been watching for some time. I have a Sony DRU-720A DVD/CD RW drive. I was happily using TAIYO YUDEN DVD-Rs (or fakes - I am not sure at all)for quite some time, went through the first 50 with some failures but not too many. Lets face it I am pretty new at generating/copying DVDs and unfortunately the past is a little blurred, but somewhere in time, I updated the firmware in my Sony, DRU-720, and the problems/failures increased dramatically. I was using Nero software, because that is what came with the unit. Updates became available, so I updated the software. Things improved a little, sometimes, but still more and more failures increasing. I updated Nero so so many many times, because it was always being updated. Then I became aware of Afterdawn, and started using some freeware recommended. I was puzzled that some of it did not seem to work with DVD -R discs, and a second lot of discs (TAIYO YUDEN -R) failed every time for the first 25/50. Nero software was so unpredictable with DVD -R & +R. Eventually, I became aware of a firmware update, JY07. I have now successfully used the last 25 of that batch I thought was faulty, and all my problems vanished after this firmware update. Sony units are Lite-on. I hope this helps a little. Regards to all.

That's good to hear. Even TY isn't perfect. It's damn close in the hands of someone who know's their way around a DVD burner. Glad to hear you're back to having success. That's why it's important to stay current with firmware updates. Sometimes people ask why I ask the same couple questions about quality media, firmware, and DMA mode. That's precisely why. I believe that cheap media is responsible for at least half the DVD burning problems on AD.

hi All, including you of course Tokijin.
My experience in creating coasters is extensive (lol). The firmware update I eventually got was NOT available for many many months, which caused so much grief. I thought I was going around the twist (insane). I kept checking Nero, Liteon, Sony, my blank DVD supplier (who also supplied my Sony burner), and checking myself, and the net. I was totally perplexxed & disollusioned. I kept reading the afterdawn forums, and others. In the end the problem was FIRMWARE, and I feel Sony, Liteon, or someone should apologize for the problems caused, and the waste of blank DVDs. Regards to all
