I got Swap Magic 3.6 a week ago. In that week, I've had to fix DRE's that come up when trying to boot Swap Magic 3 times. In the 3 years I've had this ps2 I've only had DREs twice. Now 3 times in a week, always on the Swap Magic disc. WTF?

Well there are some cheap presses of Swap Magic. Is your disc scratched or dirty? What about your laser?

74. Q. I turn on my PS2, the disc spins and makes a "clicking" sound. It says "disk read error" in my browser, what do I do?
A. This could be a sign your laser is dirty or scratched. Clean it with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol if you think it might be dirty, also be sure to check it for scratches. Fat PS2 v.1-11: http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Guides/ps2diy/ Consult the links listed earlier in this thread for info. This could also be a sign your game is dirty or scratched. You can clean it with rubbing alcohol and a lint free cloth or tissue. Only apply a couple drops of rubbing alcohol on the disc, 4 or so evenly spaced. You may want to use an eye dropper for this. Rub it with a lint free cloth or tissue in a non circular pattern until it's try. Your other option is to buff out the surface scratches with on the disc with a "Game Doctor." I came across a $20 Memorex cleaning device at Wal-Mart which basically does the same thing. It worked wonders for my scratched Breaker Pro disc. The Game Doctor will set you back around $40. If the scratches are too deep, this won't make any difference. If you get the "clicking" sound with a backup, all these same things apply. Also MAKE SURE that your not using cheap media. Again check the links posted earlier in this FAQ. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/240341

The Swap Magic disc is in perfect condition, the laser is clean and unscratched(may be that it's just old and worn out). I know how to fix the DREs, no problem there. I just drilled a hole in the top of my ps2, right behind the fliptop lid, so I can fix the DREs without having to take the unit apart, since I have to do it pretty much every time I use Swap Magic. No DREs with any other discs. I'm operating under the assumption that it's a worn out laser, and just hoping somebody here has a trick or insight that I'm not thinking of.

Could be. Once your mobo/laser hits 5 years, it's on borrowed time. My v.4 hasn't crapped out yet. If you don't have problems with anything else, don't assume it's necessarily the laser. Even though it's not scratched, a defective Swap Magic sounds like the most likely scenario. You may want to send it back for a refund/exchange.
