ok i am watching some of my favorite tv shows in hdtv off of torrents
the quality they get is fantastic---so i bought a video-card with divx or mpeg 4 recording-----so i could record shows off of my digital cable signal(which i know is not hdtv but good)
so i have my signal going thru my vcr to my computer card
everything is fine ---i record etc...in mpeg 4 and other formats
but the quality looks worse then a dam vhs tape----ive tried all sorts of settings and specs but just not getting--good quality
and i want the file size to be like 400 mb per 5o minute show like on the torrents
how and what am i doing wrong------what are the best specs to record
and --do i just go get a hdtv recording card and get a big frickin hdtv---and how do i get the hdtv signal going to my (maybe new hdtv recording card)or my existing one
im lost

What you would be downloading are 2 pass encodes from MPEG-2 TS captures. What you are doing from the sounds of it is realtime MPEG-4 encoding from an analogue source.

how could they be dvd rips--(regarding the ts thing) isnt that video_ts like a dvd------the shows barely air that monday and are availible on tuesday--in hdtv---so i know some are ripped off of dvd
but the ones im trying to do are like the new episodes that week---im an actor and i have some work on a few shows coming up and i want to record them as best as possible---
thanks can u get into detail with some stuff please

TS = Transport Stream. HDTV cards let you directly capture the MPEG-2/AC3 transport stream. This is then edited and re-encoded to XviD using 2 passes.

I'm curious about this myself..Most Cable Co. don't carry HDTV,they recommend U get an outside Antena to pick up HDTV,at least where I live in Tampa Fl.,Something to do with Legislation.Also U have to get consent from individual stations & submit to your Cable Co.,just lots of crap to go through..It's just so much easier to D/L frm TV Torrents.
So I'm useing an ATI ALL IN WONDER 9000 Card,so in order to record in HD.I need to get a different card that allows direct capture of the MPEG-2/AC3 transport stream.Then I have to re-encoded to XviD using 2 passes.Is this correct so far!
What do u recommend to re-encoded to XviD

HDTV tuner cards aren't that much anyway.
XviD is XviD, the app doesn't make all that much difference. I would probably recommend running the file through DGIndex, then using AVISynth for de-interlacing, IVCT'ing, resizing, etc.

first off celtic thanks for helping--
but back to the stupid questions
so i need an HDTV card (buy a new one) right
and can i get a really good signal thru my digital cable into the new card--or is that still analog
just basicly wanting like a whole play by play thing----
begining to end--cause again i really wanted to record on my own----and what about tivo----does that record really good and can i transfer it to computer-----etc..
any help is cool

For Digital cable you would need a DVB-C card. Regular cards are DVB-T, so I guess be carefull.
C = Cable, T = Terrestial. There is also DVD-S = Satellite.
