i just used alkohol's method to rebuild gt4. got the same results as in the tutorial, burned with dvd decrypter and everything went fine.
I used maxell media and i also use swap magic 2.0 on a fat ps2. when the game loads up i can't get past the "warning screen", the screen goes black from there. The media i use has never given me a problem before so im not sure if that is the problem. any ideas what i could be doing wrong?

The media may have never given you a problem before but it looks like it has this time.

Try using some Verbatim, or Tuiyo Yuden discs, and burn at half the maximum disc speed.

Try rebooting again, then press X once or twice real quick before the Sony Logo disappear. If you follow everything right, you should NOT be having any issues at all. I have done 4 backups using that method and it works (boot and play smoothly, no glitches whatsoever). My nephew had just finished a new backup of his GRAN TURISMO 4 followed by the guide I provided and it works flawlessly for him as well.

What is your final ISO (ie how many GB)? If you end up with 3.88GB, then try to press X like I said above.

**NOTE: not the Sony Playstion logo when you first power on your PS2 console, but the Sony message/log that appeared when you boot with your backup.

I've the same problem
I have used a SONY DVD+R burned at 1X
My game loads ok but it goes black when it should play the intro movie and before a while the laser stops reading as it has not find the file with the video...
I've read that it could be a problem of the GT4 DVD5 rip kit 1.02 that it doesn't rebuild the GT4L1.VOL propertly. When I have time I would try to rebuild the GT4L1.VOL file with the GT4 DVD5 rip kit 1.01. If you try it and it WORKS please tell me.

this game gave me the shits as well! i made 4 coasters before i got it to work.

here are some tips that i worked out and eventually got a backup of the game working (PAL version):

first problem is the media, use a good quality media - it pretty much eliminates one thing you have to troubleshoot. (i just recently bought 100 tuiyo yuden's for $AU65 - we were paying that much for mid ranged cd's 18 months ago!!)

if it's a PAL version like mine, try shrinking the pss files to 50% (not 55% like in alkohol's guide)

when you go to build the iml file with dvd generator, make sure you choose region to be Europe if it's PAL (the SCUS_973.28 file will be something like SCEU_517.38 or something) -
(yes, stupid me was trying to use japan - dont ask me why lol).

also, hit the start/x/whatever button repeatedly after it's run through the memory card load screen - dont try and watch the opening sequence

When building the iml file I've used SCES_517.19.
The DVD launchs good, but my problems comes when trying to play the intro video. I am still not able to skip the intro and entering the game by pressing the X button...
Is there any posibility to watch the intro movie or should I try to skip it???

Now it's possible to back-up GT4? Are you using the ISOBuster method? then Generator then the ISO builder?

Thanks
