Hey Everybody, well could I ask a question? When you are trying to copy a PS 2 game do you have to rip the dvd and then patch the game first or can you make straight copy? And also, could you use the pioneer DVR-A04 for copying the games and will the playstation be able to read that format?
Thanks a lot,

For US games you can just copy and play, for Japanese games you need to patch... but "your ps2 need to be mod first... PS2 is very picky on dvd-r brands... if you find a certain game doesn't play after you copy while other games can ... the problem is on the disc... as i have mentioned if you want 2X recording use ONLY Pioneer... they are 100% compatible and will burn game that plays like original.... if you don't mind speed... use ONLY Universal or A grade disc sold at buy-dvd-r.com like I'm using...
Just to remind you... Verbamin and TDK seems to be a reliable brand but their Dvd-r is no good...

yes ps2 will read dvd-r.. and doesn't matter which drive you copy them as long as the dvd-r has appropriate data/patch and it's A grade dvd-r ps2 will read it

Thanks ultima, I owe you big time. In case you are interested, if I read correctly earlier you were trying to rip movies or somebody else was from DVD's. Well here's the solution, in case you want to rip DVD's into either DivX or Video or Super Video files (mpeg1 or mpeg 2), the best and easiest program to use would be DVDx (www.labdv.com). The program is FREE!
So just in case you were interested, there you go.
Thanks again,

Hi again! When you are trying to put a movie onto a DVD-R, you have to rip the DVD first with CladDVD and then use IFOedit, is that correct? And if it is, what are you ment to do with IFOedit?
Thanks!

Can you use DVD+R to create backups of PS2 games.
I have the Messiah chip fitted to my PS2 and want to buy a DVD burner (preferably dvd+R/RW) but also want to copy ps2 games.
I have read that the Pioneer DVD writers using DVD-R work ok on PS2 but what about +R ?
Hope you guys can help.

pauldakin: Out of curiosity, why in the hell you want to buy a "plus" drive -- discs cost 5-10 times more than "minus" discs and "minus" drives are much, much, much more popular, at least among "underground users". If you browse through our forums, you see people begging, whining, complaining and crying because they made a mistake of buying DVD+R/W drive and now pay $3-6 for cheap blank media and have drives that burn movies that wont play on PS2.

dRD,
I am looking to buy the Phillips standalone DVD+RW recorder at some point in the future for tv recording and the DVD+RWs it uses are compatible with the +rw drive on the PC. I will only have to buy 1 type of media (2 if we include +r & +rw).
I want to copy camcorder film to dvd as well as copy ps2 games.
Any advice is useful as I have not spent any money just yet, I know the media is expensive but surely that will change I used to fork out £10 per blank CDR once upon a time....
Cheers

By compatibility, what do you mean? I agree that if you buy DVD+RW stand-alone recordable and DVD-R/W drive, you are kinda confused, since you need to get two sorts of blank discs. But if you meant that you want your stand-alone recorder to be able to play the discs you burn with your PC-DVD drive, I'm almost 100% certain that the Philips will play DVD-Rs as well. That's the kinky thing with recordable discs, compared to -- and everybody does this comparision -- '80s Beta vs VHS fight. If you have DVD+R/W drive, it will be happy to _READ_ DVD-R/W discs and vice versa. Only the burning is the issue in here.

Maybe I am a little confused but I thought that you could take a DVD 'plus' RW disk from a standalone recorder and *edit* its contents on a PC equipped with a DVD 'plus' RW drive without having to rewrite the whole disk as with DVD 'minus' RW.
I don't want to spend £240 on a +rw drive just to copy games but for the same token I don't want to spend £240 on something that cannot copy games either. I want to buy something now that might prove more useful to me in the future. I have read some postings that suggest buying 1 of each drive is the way forward for now but by no means the cheapest.
Is there a drive that can record onto both + and - disks - this would solve the issue?
BTW, thanks for your advice

Sony has recently announced a dual-format drive that will ship Q3/2002 hopefully.
But to answer your question: NO. You can't take the recorded DVD-/+RW disc and edit it -- you need to copy the contents to HDD and edit them there, format the disc again and burn it back to DVD-/+RW anyway.
So, basically you could buy the Philips stand-alone recorder and one DVD+RW disc to it, record whatever you want, bring it to your HDD, edit it and record it back to DVD-R or DVD-RW with your "minus" drive and you would achieve exactly the same as having "plus" drive in your computer.

Thanks guys - I bought the Pioneer 104 -R/-RW drive in the end - £194 inc VAT from SVP Communications. Those guys supply good cheap media too.
I'm very pleased with the drives performance and capabilities, divx>dvd works a treat. PS2 backups work great on the right disks too.
Cheers
