Alright, so I backed up a DVD movie using DVDShrink and now I'm trying to burn it using Nero 6. However, when I insert the blank DVD into the burner and it says "Waiting for the drive to become ready...", it would then say "The drive is not initializing! - perhaps due to a defective disc". I've already tried a DVD-R and a DVD+R, both different brands, and it still wouldn't go through. This is the first time I've run into this problem, so I'm not sure what to do. Any help is appreciated, thank you.

burner: I/O Magic Dual Format 4x DVD+/-RW, DVD+/-R ReWritable Drive

blank DVD brands: TDK (DVD-R)
Staples (DVD+R)

The Staples brand I haven't even used yet, so I'm not sure if they're good or not, but I got them for a great price so I picked up a spindle.

The manufacturer of the burner or the discs? I used the DVD Identifier program to analyze both DVD brands I use, and for both this is what it's giving me:

"Unable To Initialize Disc In Time : Not ready - Incompatible medium installed [02/30/00]"

The wierd thing is that I've used the TDK discs plenty of times with no problems at all, and now when it analyzes TDK it gives the same error.

Check your writers firmware:

It may not be able to read the newest discs.

see my sig, TDK use widely differing quality in manufacturers so you could have ended up with a set of discs from a completely different (and atrocious) manufacturer maybe. also those i/o magic drives are not the best in the world..

Thanks for all the help, I could understand if the Staples brand DVD+R wouldn't work. As for the TDK DVD-R, it's really wierd because I still have 3 more TDK blanks from a 25-pack spindle, and from the previous 22 I used I never got 1 coaster from them, and now all of a sudden they all don't work. I guess it's time for a new faster burner anyway.

Jinzo,

Go buy some Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim before you purchase a new burner, and try them first. If they don't work, than a new burner maybe in order, but you can still use the TY or Verbs in the new burner.

Good luck,

Rich

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try some Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim. What are good sites to order TY and Verbatim from? I've been checking Shop4Tech and SuperMediaStore.com and they seem to have some good prices. Are there better sites to order from?

Yes, SuperMediaStore.com is a very good place to order, also meritline.com can also be good.
