Hi guys,

I followed the guide on how to convert anamorphic 16:9 movie to xvid in the guides section of this site. The movie length is 118 minutes long. I want to convert it to a 700mb avi using Xvid, but (following the guide), i've got an audio track of 135mb (mp3 with wav extension), which only leaves 576mb for the movie, resulting in a low bitrate for the video.

Can anyone recommend any way of reducing the size of the audio track so i can get a better bitrate for the video? The resolution i'm using is 640x360 if it makes any difference.

Thanks guys,
Blighter

check out this software. It is called "avi.NET". and it automatically selects everything for you. All you do, is select the size of the movie you want "ex: 700mb". It is the easiest, and could be the best, and it is FREE. (it also auto selects 16:9), so it will work for you.

If you want small audio, I would suggest he AAC or vorbis over mp3. AAC in AVI is possible, as is vorbis (kinda). I still wouldn't recommend it though. So if you really must use AVI as a container then I guess you are stuck. That is assuming lowering the audio bitrate isn't acceptable. If it is, then just lower the audio bitrate.

By the way 360 is not mod16.

Hi,

Following the guide, in CDex, it told me to set the minimum bitrate to 160kpbs (non vbr), do you reckon lowering it to 128 is alright?

Could you explain the last bit for me (360 is not mod16)? I assume you mean that the 640x360 resolution i'm using isn't right? I'm just goin by the guide (i realise it's a bit old) but also NiTroGen's XviD bitrate Calculator has 640x360 as a 16:9 resolution? Am i speaking rubbish?

Thanks

Btw, i think i might be able to get AAC into the AVI using VirtualDub or VirtualDubMod. If i can, should i use Nero AAC or iTunes, and what settings? Would this be better than lame mp3 128kbps?

Instead of CBR 160, you could use say -V 4 --vbr-new.
640x360 is indeed 16:9, but as I said, 360 is not mod16 and for best compressibility you should stick with mod16 resolutions. This is due to the way that the codec divides the picture into macroblocks.

To mux AAC to AVI, you need to use AVIMuxGUI. Then again, if you are going to use AAC audio, you have already lost about the only advantage AVI has; compatibility. So you may as well use mp4.

At 128k, you really don't gain too much. At lower bitrates, he AAC should be better than mp3.

In terms of compatibility, the only reason i wouldn't wanna use AAC then, is because the person i want to see the resulting AVI would have to have the audio AAC codec installed then?

Grrr havin trouble now...

Can't figure out how to get iTunes to convert to AAC within AAC container rather than m4a, so i kept with MP3

Before, i used CDex as the guide said, but at your recommendation tried to use the new Lame parameters instead.

I couldn't figure out how to get CDex to send the Lame (external encoder) the correct paramters (the LAMe window kept shutting down immediately), so i encoded it in Lame via Easy CD DA extractor using your parameters and it was fine. I used AVIMux to combine the audio n video file but when i tried to open the AVI, it said windows media player cannot open the file.

I thought that might be because it didn't have a Riff-wav header, but i gave it one in CDex and then avimuxed it but it still didn't work.

@celtic_d : what program do you recommend for getting the wav files into the correct format?

Also, does anyone know of any way to get Easy CD Da extractor to automatically detect the normalisation factor a wav file needs? Or any way to find out what factor it needs?

Cheers Dudes

AVIMuxGUI can handle mp3 audio fine. No need for wav headers.

Windows comes with an AVI splitter and mp3 decoder, so assuming your codecs/filters haven't gotten screwed up, that just leaves a lack of XviD decoder, although it should still play the audio, no?

Perhaps you had AVIMuxGUI output to mkv insted of AVI? That would require that you have an mkv splitter installed.

The video works fine before avimux and i can play the audio file in winamp, but after putting it through avimux, the combined file doesn't work?

I haven't changed any of the settings in avimux so it's all on default...i've definitely saved it to an AVI (not an mkv).

I encoded the video in VirtualDubMod, if that makes any difference?

hmm...just found out that the file works in Media Player Classic, but not windows media player? Any suggestions as to why?

Ah, that would be because MPC has its own AVI splitter and AVIMuxGUI is capable of creating avi's that MS' splitter can't handle. Kind of ironic since AVI is an MS format and AVIMuxGUI's output is perfectly spec compliant.

My advice would be to use the standalone mp3 profile.

Bit confused, sorry. You said use the standard MP3 profile? The standard mp3 profile in which program, sorry? How can i change my set up to get the avi's working in Windows media player? What programs should i use for making the AVI in future?

I said standalone profile, not standard. It will limit AVIMuxGUI so that it creates more compatible avi's.
