Burn 5.1 channel XVID AVI to DVD preserving multi-channel audio?

Hey, folks,
I've got an xvid-encoded AVI with Dolby Digital 5.1-encoded audio. I'd like to preserve the multi-channel audio when burning this to DVD. I have Nero 6.6 (Nero Vision 3), and if I try to burn directly from XVID to DVD, the only audio options are PCM, Dolby Digital 2.0 or Automatic. Seems like it'll downconvert the 5.1 channel mix to stereo, which I don't want. Do I need to use Nero recode first to recode to Nero Digital then burn these to DVD or can I go direct in one pass?
If Nero 6.6 doesn't support this then what does? Would AVItoDVD work to convert AVI with DD5.1 audio to DVD with DD5.1 audio?

If you want to Keep the Multi-Channel Audio you are Going to have to use a Whole Different DVD authoring/Encodeing Method because the Software you are useing doesn"t support Multi-Channel audio and is Crappy Consumer Software for makeing Very Basic DVD"s anyways....
What you have to Do is Extract the Dolby 5.1 audio from the AVI file and then you encode the AVI Video to a DVD Compliant MPEG-2 Video file and then you use a Good DVD authoring program to author the MPEG-2 Video file and the Dolby 5.1 audio file to DVD....
This is a fairly Complicated process if you have never authored a DVD this way before and Unless you have a 5.1 surround Sound Set up you will not be able to hear the Differance when listening on a Stereo Set up....
So if you do have a Surround Sound Set up and want to learn how to do this then let me Know and I will Try to explain it to you but if you don"t then you should probably encode it like you normally would as you won"t hear the 5.1 differance....

Thanks for the reply. If it's that complicated and can't be done simply using widely available tools, then it's probably not worth it for me. BTW, I have no trouble hearing the "5.1 difference" - I'm the editor of a home theater e-zine and my home theater system is at least passingly good (all Martin Logan speakers, Outlaw surround processor and amp, Pioneer Elite DVD player, etc.).
But I can actually already take advantange of the 5.1 channel sound of these AVIs in my system because I have a Buffalo LinkTheater Wireless Media hub which wirelessly streams the AVI files including the 5.1 channel audio from my computer right to my surround processor. The reason I'm asking about preserving the multi-channel audio track from AVI to DVD is that I'd like to be able to make a DVD copy for use in another system.
But thanks for the reply. If anyone else knows of a simple way to do this, I'd love to hear about it. Nero Vision Express supports 5.1 channel sound (I can convert these from AVI to Nero Digital and preserve the AC3 5.1 track) but apparently does not support it when burning to DVD. At least not that I can tell.

Hi
After reading the above i now have a question, is it at all possible to convert 2 channel audio to 5:1 dolby surround? if it is what software would you recomend? the audio would be stripped from a avi/divx movie.

Hey, folks,
Replying to my own post here. Apparently Nero Vision Express *does* support multi-channel (AC3/5.1) sound for burning DVDs but it's a separate plug-in ($19.99) - available on the Nero site. So at least I know my options.

You can convert Stereo to dolby 5.1 but it won"t be a true Dolby 5.1 file because you will just be Duplicateing the Stereo Channels to create the Dolby 5.1 so there will not be a True surround sound experience.....You can do this in Vegas Video 6.....

Hi there,
VSO ConvertXtoDVD v2.0 will convert .AVI file with multiple audio tracks.
I've never came across such a file, but I am told the new version supports them !

I need help doing this. Im trying to keep the 5.1 Dolby soundtrack and burn it to a dvd. Can someone tell me what software i sould be using. Note: i already have tryed "avi to dvd" and it took almost 11 hours and only compleated like 15 min. of the movie.
Please help!

Nero 6 Ultra Edition (v. 6.6 with Nero Digital 3.1) definitely works for this, but you need the multi-channel audio plug-in, which is an additional cost item ($20).
To do it, assuming you have the plug-in and the correct version of Nero, then start up Nero Start Smart or Nero Vision Express to create a new DVD-Video and add the AVI files.
Hit the "More" button to expose the configuration options and hit "Video Options" then, under the "DVD-Video" tab, the bottom option is for "Audio format." If you have the multi-channel audio plug-in installed, then Dolby Digital (AC-3) 5.1 appears as one of the options.
As long as the AVI has a true AC3/5.1 audio track, then I think you can select "automatic" or "Dolby Digital (AC-3) 5.1" and it will transfer over the 5.1-channel audio track. I've tested this with "Dolby Digital (AC-3) 5.1" selected and it worked great, with 5.1-channel audio on the resulting DVD.

You can use "AVI Mux" to Seperate the AC3 audio from the AVI file... (deselect the Video stream and save with AC3 extention)
Then Encode the AVI video file to a MPEG-2 Video file (M2V/MPV) useing a Standalone Encoder Like TMPGEnc and then author the M2V Video file and the AC3 audio file to DVD useing something like "Tmpgenc DVD Author" and then you will have a DVD with Dolby 5.1 audio....

I used WinAvi video converter to convert the video to VOB. and keep the dolby digital track and it worked. but now im trying to burn with Nero and it gives me an error saying that the file "movie.vob" is larger that 2 gigabytes. and it wont let me burn it as a dvd movie. This never happened before when i use to back up my dvd's and have to drag the video folder to the other video folder in Nero. Is it the way its being put together or is something wrong with Nero?

A Valid DVD Compliant "Video_TS" Folder has VOB files that are in 1gb Pieces and if they are Bigger then they aren"t DVD Compliant....
I don"t know why Poeple refuse to Learn how to make a DVD the Proper Way (Encoder and authoring Program)...Everyone Just wants to Cut Corners and do everything the Fastest and Easiest way Possible with No regard to quality or Functionality, and when things don"t work out properly they wonder why....

Has anyone compared the sound of DD 2.0 versus the 5.1 ?
it seems like music is normally better in 2.0 since you get a more powerful sound out of the 2 main speakers; it seems like they take some impact out of each channel and spread it around in 5.1 concerts
also, how about playing a DD 2.0 recording and playing in the 5 channel stereo mode. I tried that on my friend's Harman receiver and it sounded very good with music and it sounded good in the movie as well
pistol fire seemed to sound better in 5 channel stereo than in movie mode
Has anyone experimented with this before?
