Technically no, because MGS3 is actually a prequel to the first two MGS'. Hell, it's a prequel to the first Metal Gear's in general. If you do decide to play MGS1 and 2 you'll see a familar face or two though. But I'd recommend playing the first two at some point.

The way I played the MGS serie's is this: Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty - MGS 1 - Metal Gear - MGS Ghost Babel (Gameboy version)
and now i'm still trying to complete MGS3.

I liked the way I played the series, becourse when I played MGS1 after I played MGS2, I learned more thing's about MGS2 that made me play it again.

But what TMACRPG is saying is true.
MGS3 is Technically the First game in the series.
So it would be best to play this first.
BTW in MGS3 your not playing Snake but The Big Boss.
Wich is Snake's (main person in all the other MG/MGS games)Father.

think the best way to play it is defo start out with MGS 1 (ya can download it for the PC on limewire or wherever..its only 50mb when zipped up) mainly cus it makes MGS 2 much better.. the game it hilrious when you get to the end.. the way the story is interweaved with MGS 1. But really you can play MGS 3 whenever because its a prequel. But id recommend keeping it the way they were released if you can. For graphic, and control reasons. You can do more with snake and others in the later games so you might get frustrated having been able to do some cool moves in MGS 3 that you cant do in MGS 1. Id maybe even recommend playing Metal Gear 1 for the MSX to get even deeper into the story.
But in the end you should just get into the games soon.. fantastic games with great stories.
My favourite game was MGS 1 so maybe im pushing it for that reason.
Anyways have fun!

I played one through to 3, can't wait for Subsistance, especially the online mode!

MGS 2 : Substance I got for a tenner :D So it was great buy, despite owning the original.

Gray Fox, AKA Frank Jaeger, by far. I mean Solid Snake and Big Boss are great characters and David Hayter (MacGuyver from the movie and their Voice) is the man, but Gray Fox is definetly my favorite Metal Gear(Solid) character. He's complex and just bad@$$. On another note, a totally unrelated Snake, Snake Plisken is bad@$$ as well. (Hells yeah Kurt Russel!) =P

I'll always love MGS 1, I can remember seeing a Gamecube version of it, is it any good beacause i would maybe consider playing games aggain for that gem.

I've never played MGS: The Twin Snakes, the remake available on Gamecube, but it's supposed to be a good game. It has update graphics that are about the same as MGS2, some added cinematics and plot points, the original cast of voice actors and you can use all of Snake's moves from MGS2, like hanging from ledges, FP aiming, etc.

I was thinking of buying it just for kicks. The only complaint I could see is using the GCN Controller, not sure how it'd play out but I guess RE4 was fine.

I remember when i was 9 and finished mgs1 for ps and when i knew that mgs2 was going to be launched to ps2 i bought when it come to realise
I played and enjoyed a lot because of the story and it was too a revolution in action games (First Person View in a 3rd person game)
Since i´ve heard the name of the Patriots I want them d***
I hoped that in mgs3 but the character was BIG BOSS. But in fact i like more mgs3 than mgs2.
Now i´ll try to buy ps3 and MGS4 to see the end of the series (according to Hideo Kojima)
