I have a Pioneer DVD+-RW Drive Version 106d....

I have found a firmware upgrade but it states that Once I upgrade the firmware of the drive that it cannot be reversed. I am not as of yet having problems backing up my DVDs and what I was wondering is should I really worry about the upgrade until I start having probs..

My biggest worry is if I do the Firmware upgrade and it messes with my ability to burn DVDs...
Just looking for a little advise and re-assurance I guess..

Some might say if it ain't broke, don't fix it. But in the case of firmware for DVD burners it can be a different story. Firmware tells your burner how to handle different media including media upgrades such as from 4x to 8x media, etc. The best thing to do is see exactly what the firmware upgrade is all about. There should be a text file or pdf file stating what changes are made, (improvements made,) to the firmware upgrade. See if anything in there is important to you. Lastly just make sure you read everything there is and have everything ready to do the firmware upgrade. Most are fairly easy to do.

Worst case is that you have ruined your DVD burner. Guess what, terrific ones out on the market today run $40 - $60.

If you want a bit of assurance, if it was my burner, I would do it in a heartbeat!

Hey ashcan26,

I'm a firmware junkie and upgrade whatever I can whenever I can, but if you don't feel comfortable and everything is already workin good then, like the old saying goes, if it ain't broke don't fix it :)

Cheers

Hi ashcan26,

I've been playing with computers since I was in High School and I will be 38 this year, so it's been a while :)

I guess I've been lucky, since I have never ever had an issue, upgrading firmware on motherboards, modems, CD and DVD burners.

I am also a Version Junkie (Software & Firmware).

As mentioned above, worse case scenario, you will end up buying a new burner :)

One thing I personally never did, was used Hacked Firmware.
This way I do not void my warranty, and personnaly, I am pleased with what the Original Firmware offers me.

Personal Choice.

v1.08 seems to be the latest firmware for your Pioneer 106D burner.

My 2 cents...
