I have an AVI file with following specs:
VIDEO: xvid; 955 kb/s bitrate; 23.976 fps; 0.229 bits/pixel Qf; 640x272 (2.35:1) [=40:17] x:y; 02:24:57 (208,516 fr) runtime
AUDIO: ac3 (0x2000) Dolby Laboratories, Inc; 384 kb/s (6 ch) CBR; 48000 Hz

Strange. I'm rater sure that AVI could be corrupt at approx 45%.
Try loading that AVI with an AVI fixer to see if there's someting wrong...
Or you could lose some seconds and save that AVI with
VirtualDub___Select Range:
1) 0 ____ (X - delta)
2) (X+delta) ___ end

I made a mistake in explaining the situation: The conversion stops at 50% every time.
I just remembered that I joined 2 movie AVI files into one with VirtualDub (direct stream copy) and saved the movie as one big whole.
Could the error occur bc VirtualDub did not join them properly?

And second,
if I I want to go around the join-with-VirtualDub step,
can TMPGEnc xpress process 2 AVIs and join them as one whole for the final product?

I downloaded and joined another set of 2 AVI files. (different from those used in the problem above)
I have latest version of VirtualDub.
Same problem occured: Processing stopped at 50%

I've had this same problem with TMPGÈnc Xpress. Then tried TMPGÈnc Plus and it worked. Try to encode both avis separately to mpegs and then merge these 2 mpegs using TMPGÈnc's merge&cut tool.

Right now I am trying to convert part one of 2 AVIs to 2 ES using TMPGEnc xpress. Last time I tried converting both together but I did not join them with virtual dub, and still TMPGEx haulted on 50%. Always 50% which seems strange to me . I dont believe im doing something wrong with settings bc i followed the guide. If this single AVI does not get converted.... Im stuck.

Hey again,
Video fixing software did not look too promising, so I decided to go with tmpegenc plus 2.5 to convert my big AVI to MPEG-2.
Settings made in TMPGEnc plus
changed audio to layer II 192kbps 2pass VBR and close GOPs, so DVDLAB sofware accepts the MPEG2 as input with no probs. Well see what happens.

I am currently trying to convert the same video with TMPGenc plus. But did not see option to set output size and it seems to be taking longer time to process the file than express took.
I am concerned about the output file size because I am not sure if DVDLab will be capable to resize without quality loss if the file is too big for dvd5
TMPGenc 2.5, for an unknown reason to me, is taking 5 hours more to convert AVI to MPEG than Xpress. I wonder why.

I get the same error (Invalid sample format.(error code 0x80048002)) with TMPGEnc 3.0 express, at 50% of encoding from avi2dvd. It seems to be happening when going to pass 2. The specs for the AVI are:
video: XviD, bitrate 1313kb/s, fps 23.97,Qf 0.243 bits/pixel, xy 640x352 (1:82:1), runtime 0:55:24 (79,692fr).
audio: codec AC3 (0x2000) Dolby Labs, bitrate 448kb/s (5ch) CBR, Fs 48000 Hz
I have had the same problem with other avi's but most work fine. It even happens with varying FPS's and audio bit rates. I have tried other avi2dvd applicatons (dvd santa, avi2dvd, winavi) on these bad avi's but all these applications don't even open the AVI and lock up. I have no problems palying the avi's, just converting them. It doesn't seem to make any difference whether you have joined avi's or try seperate coversions. I even tried decompressing the audio prior to conversion but no joy.
I don't know if this helps but just letting you know you are not alone.

I am currently trying a way to make it work which I read about on some site. At 41% now .... if any luck ill post resolution.

It's possible, that this problem occurs when you try to encode a movie with AC3 dvm audio.
Try this: encode _video_ only with TMPGEnc, that will give you .m2v file. Transcode audio stream to mp2 or to "normal" AC3 with audio util like BeSweetGUI: http://dspguru.doom9.net/ .. or install AC3ACM decompressor and then you can convert/decompress AC3 audio directly to WAV / MP3 using VirtualDub. Then you'll have both video and audio source files to build DVD.

I was able to pass the 50% mark with TMPGEnc Xpress 3.0.
Solution turned out to be very simple.
Open virtualdub; load the AVI which gives errors in TMPGenx Xpress
Separate audio by going to File>Save WAV as
Now go to audio > no audio
and video > direct stream copy
Save as AVI.
What above stemp will result in is separated video and audio channels into 2 files, AVI and WAV for audio.
Load AVI and WAV into TMPGEnc xpress and the problem shouldnt occur anymore.

Cheers Lyoohoha and Stardust, I'll give it a bash.
Just to let you know, I tried another encoder called VSO DivXtoDVD and this worked. It's a commercial product but they have trial version to try out. It's real basic, with no menu options but it worked a treat with reasonable speed and pretty good quality and it even runs the burn process. Unfortunately the trial version stamps the product name on the resulting DVD until you purchase the product but hey, no other of the shelf application worked in one simple step.

Yup....
divx2dvd is a great program but it cannot be compared to TMPGEnc encoding set to highest quality (error correction mode) . I was surprised to have output size only about 500mb greater than the input AVI. So my DVD turned out to have only about 2.5 gigs of info on it with musical menu and everything.
tmpgenc xpress is a great program once one understands how to use it properly.

Well when you do "2-Pass VBR" it does 1 Pass (0% to 50%) and then does the second Pass (50% to 100%) so your Problem is Happening right after the First Pass so I suggest that you "NOT" use "2 Pass VBR" as it Doesn"t really Improove the Quality very Much But it does Make the encodeing Take Twice as Long....
Also you can Get "Tmpgenc Pluss" to Load 2 Files in at the Same Time if you Name your AVI Files sequentially ..(EG: Movie001.AVI and Movie002.avi) then Load in the First File and the second File will also Load in But you have to have this Feature enabled in the Options...
Also TMPGEnc Pluss will not accept the Dolby AC3 audio in your AVI File so it would be best to extract the AC3 from the AVI file before encodeing to MPEG-2 and useing the Dolby AC3 File when authoring to DVD with DVDLab....
