I backed up San Andreas using Decrypter. Riped it with ISO read.
It created 2 files one was 4GB the other was 5k! Do I only burn the 4GB file? And what do I need (specifically) to be able to play it on my slim PS2? (what kind of mod?)
What is the best dvd to burn it to?

All these questions can be answered by you reading the stickies at the top of the board.. the ones in BOLD... that's what they are there for.

Quick answers:
IF San Andreas was a DVD9, you'd either need to Rebuild (Shrink) it to fit on two DVD5's (single layer DVD) or get a modchip & burn it to a dual layer (DVD9) DVD.
Recommended modchips: Matrix Infinity or DMS4:
http://infinitymod.com/cgi-bin/matrix/site.pl?page=home http://www.dms4.com If you want to burn high quality, long lasting games use Taiyo Yuden. There is other media you can use, but make sure it has a good media code. You can find these by breaking open the package and letting DVD Decrypter read the DVD-R/DVD+R. I recommend DVD-R if you are burning PS2 games. Burn it slow, at 1X or 2X maximum so video doesn't skip. Read the PS2 FAQ (also in my signature) and you'll learn 99% of what you would ever need. Good luck.
if you're a college student, do NOT settle with the RIAA http://tinyurl.com/37oz2z
~ SlimPS2 v15US, PSP v3.60FW, TaiyoYuden DVD-R, SwapMagic_v3.6 & BreakerPro 1.1 (No mod)

San Andreas isn't Dual Layer or DVD-9, GTA 4 is.

easy answer:
Burn the 5kb MDS file, that is the same as a Cue file on a CD.
It tells the burner what file to burn and how to burn it.
It will actually burn the ISO file, but choose the MDS file with
DVD Decrypter in the ISO Write mode.

Well DVD+R or DVD-R working on your PS2 really has more to do with what v. PS2 you have. If you have a v.1-3 PS2, DVD+R's won't work well. If you have a v.4 PS2 DVD+R's will be 50/50. v.5 PS2's and later should work fine with DVD+R's. I happen to have a v.4 PS2 that read's DVD+R's fine. I use Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's for my DVD-5 games, and I use Verbatim DVD+R DL for my DVD-9 games. Booktyping DVD+R's is always a good idea. I'm not saying you're wrong Boobooman, I'm just saying what works for you may not work for everybody. Cheers!

There are several constant disc access games, NFSMW for instance. I don't know if I'm "better" than you, I do read a lot. I've got aways to go to reach Hursty though lol. Good to see you around Hursty. Cheers!

1. Q. How do I burn PS2 games?
A. Use DVD Decrypter.
Guide: http://www.angelfire.com/games6/easytutorial/dvddec/dvddec.html Burn at 4x on a quality 8x DVD-R.
2. Q. Does the type of media I use matter?
A. YES: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/240341 If you're too lazy to read, use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Ritek, Sony, TDK, Maxell, Sony or Phillips DVD-R's. Avoid Memorex, Staples, Imation, Dynex, Princo, Bulqpaq, etc.
CMC Magnetics is garbage. Need proof (Thanks to Alkohol):
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/262544 If you really want to do the PS2 backup thing right, pick up some Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim's. I only burn to TYG02, the 8x Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's. So far I've never had a lag, skip, freeze, or boot failure since I switched to Taiyo Yuden's. With results like that, why would I use anything else? The brand of media you use means very little.
The key determinant of media quality is the Media ID. For info on the Media ID, check the bottom of this thread.
3. Q. Do I need some type of mod to play PS2 backups or imports?
A. Yes you need a modchip: http://teammodders.com/ps2_mc.php?ex=2 Swap Magic: http://swapmagic3.com/ Memory Card Exploit (Doesn't work with v.11 PS2 and later): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/109289 HD Loader: http://www.hdloader.com.au/hardinstall#prepare or
HD Advance: http://www.hdadvance.com/hd_advance_how-to-use.htm
91. Q. What is the Media ID of a DVD and how can I find it?
A.The Media ID of a DVD is the true measure of it's quality. It contains prerecorded info about the disc's manufacturer. The quality of the disc will vary depending on the media code. The media code isn't visible on the disc or the packaging. To check the media ID, Open DVD Decrypter, insert your disc, and check what it says under Media ID or Manufacturer ID. You can also use a program called DVD Identifier which is very useful. You can find it here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id...
Last but not least you can use DVD Info Pro: http://www.dvdinfopro.com/ Compare the Media ID to this link: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

You use neros "burn image to disc" option and choose the iso... most image programs will only allow you to burn supported image types anyway, so Nero wouldn't let you choose the mds file.

Well that's partly true. The official firmware doesn't allow booktyping/bitsetting. You can booktype with the Pioneer DVR-109, however you have to use hacked buffalo firmware v8.xx. A lot of people have had issues with trying to cross flash their burner with the Buffalo firmware. It is not recommended unless you're extremely knowlegable about DVD burning. I wouldn't even attempt to Cross Flash my burner. v.4 PS2's and later should handle DVD+R's okay. Generally you should probably stick with quality DVD-R's like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim if your drive doesn't support booktyping/bitsetting.

yeah ive got two one has hacked firmware and 1 has offcail pin firmware and the hacked one works fine for movies/data but get more coaster with ps2games i wouldnt surgest the cross hack very unstable at times but ive never had much problem with ps2 game either on + or - on the non hacked drive but my v10 ps2 seems to prefre the +
do not use the cross firmware if you cant afford a new drive
