The disc is scratched. Try using Alcohol 120% to back it up. DVD Decrypter is picky with scratched discs.

88. Q. How do I burn PS2 DVD games with Alcohol 120%?
A. Ripping the game to your Hard Drive:
1. Insert your disc.
2. Open Alcohol 120%.
3. Click Image Making Wizard.
4. Check Ignore read errors, select your recorder, leave the never seperate box alone.
5. Click Next. Select a destination for the game. Click Start.
Once the process is complete, you'll get an mds and an mdf file. Click finish, if necessary.

Burning the game to DVD:
1. Insert your blank disc.
2. Right click the mdf file.
3. Select Image Burning Wizard.
4. Select your recorder, set the write speed to 4x.
5. Click next.

Note: I use Alcohol 120% as my backup program for ripping scratched originals. DVD Decrypter can be picky with scratched discs. I use DVD Decrypter to burn the mds file. For purposes of this guide, I'm assuming you are using Alcohol 120% to burn the game to disc. Feel free to use whatever works for you.

Tokijin,

Well I gave Alcohol 120% a go but it got to 7% and then came up with a whole bunch of "disc read errors". I had a look at the disc and it doesn't appear to be scratched, but then I noticed in the middle its cracked near the centre hole. Not on the actual disc at all just the plastic near the whole. Looks as if someone has yanked it out of the dvd case and cracked it. It still plays on the PS2 but wont let me back it up. I would think this is the problem. What do you think?? Thanks for your time and advice!!

Well it's gonna do that regardless. 99% of the time an I/O error is a scratched or dirty disc. Check ignore read errors and let finish. It might take awhile, but it'll finish. You can abort the process at anytime. I've done this numerous times with scratched games.
