Can someone please help with this avi error?

For the last few times when I have downloaded movies that are in AVI format, this is my problem....I go to double-click on it in Windows Explorer and I get a message.."windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to shut down". I just even need to highlight the file and get the same error message. If the file is in the recyle bin and I click to delete out of the bin, I get the same message. If I want to play it on the computer I get the message "windows media player has encountered a problem and needs to shut down" I can't even link to the avi file to encode it. I have xp and restored to previous points to no avail. Don't know what to do or try.

Alo if I disable media plaayer and use the excellent program "irfanview" this is the message when I try to play the avi file....Can not find "vids:xvid" decompressor

ANYONE ever get this error or have this problem, I see in the google search others have but no proper solution given..ed

Do you have a MPEG4 codec installed on your system. You will need it to play XviD. If not do a search for MPEG4 codec and download 1 and see if that fixes the problem.

i also have xp system and a lot of the time i get the same error and i use windows media player clasice you might try instaling quicktime and use that to view your AVI files
