You can choose any combination of numbers/letters for the first 4 spots, right? For example, if I were to patch something with the patch code like this: xx xx 30 59 AC, I can put whatever I want in the spots where the x's are? Thanks in advance.

Yes. You can use any combo as long as it's A-F or 0-9. That's hexadecimal.
