HELP!!! Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K12D in a Toshiba Satellite A45--S250 laptop malfunction

i have a one and a half year old laptop. Sparingly used drive - no problem till november, when it stopped writing to a cd disc saying invalid media. No problems in reading cds. Sometime would write the cd but i would find no files on it. I use windows XP cd writing software - always had. It also does not read a dvd, keeps trying to read.
I installed nero express and it gives the following message:
your drive not in a DMA mode. can Nero manager enable it. Once i enable it, it asks me to reboot the system. After rebooting i find it is still not enabled.
Please help.
