Hi everyone. As you can tell I have a "Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-105". I've been using "Ritek Inkjet Printable (4x) DVD-R". But these types of DVD always seem to make the game slow down, and then ultimatly crash. I have swap magic 3.6 and magic keys. The PS2 is the slim line edition "SCPH-70003 CB" (Pal). I know various posters on here recommend certain media but I'm not sure which ones would suit mine as my DVD-RW isn't too quick. Below are a couple of sites related to my dvd-rw and the various types of DVD that may work. Any help that i can receive would be amazing!! Thanks everyone.

hi here is a thread to recommended media http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/240341
have a look here also verbatims are also good media

as for your drive being slow, when burning ps2 games the slower the better you should try to burn at 1X or 2X maximum for best results

i hope this helps

When I meant the drive being slow, I meant that from what i've read my DVD-RW is not a lover of media over 4x. Making it difficult to get any good media as most is 8x. Or does that not matter, as long as i write at 1x or 2x? I have found some taiyo yuden dvd-r discs (i've heard are the best), but it states

"Suggested for use on the following hardware: Pioneer 107/A07, Pioneer 108/A08, Pioneer 109/A09, Pioneer 110D, NEC ND-3500/3520/3540, Sony DVD+/-R drives, Plextor DVD+/-R drives, Liteon DVD+/-R drives, LG DVD+/-R drives and most other DVD-R writers and modern DVD players (using the latest firmware)."

As you can tell my Pioneer 105 isn't on the list. So what should i do? The only reason i purchased the Ritex 4x DVD-R discs was because they were compatible with my 105 and i heard that Ritek are quite good. I know there must be loads of threads like this so i appreciate everybodys patience!

hi i think that your drive will only support 4X as i dont think there is a firmware update for it :-(
i dont know where you live but here in usa 4X discs are available to buy still.
maybe you could use it for an excuse to get a shiny new 16X burner lol :-)
as for the recommended media brands i do not know what brands will work or will not work. i had a sony burner once that liked some brands & totally refused to recognize other brands? i have no experience of ritek disks so cannot comment on them either.
i would buy a good branded disc & see if it works. sorry i cant help you more

I'm in the U.K. I think most other Pioneer DVD-RW drives use 16x dvd discs, but i think mine is back in the stone age. I could update the DVD-RW but it seems like a lot of hassle if there are the appropriate discs around. Thanks for your help gjl2002. I'll just have to hope that someone had the same problem as me and managed to fix it.

So why do burnt games slow down and crash when using Swap Magic/Magic Keys? Is it simply because the media is crap, copied too quickly, or the dvd-rw isn't updated with firmware (i'm not sure how to do that with mine)? I assume its the media or the files themself. Whenever the game is loading I can tell that the laser appears to be having trouble keeping up with amount of information it needs to gather. And then slowly starts to slow down and eventually stop altogether. Anyone else have this problem? And how do you fix it? ALSO....what is bookmarking (i've heard that helps somehow)? And can i do it with dvd-r? As i've only heard dvd+r can bookmark.

hi
i have no experience with ritek but a common cause of problems can be due to the media, as for updating firmware you would have to download the latest firmware & run it & this will update your dvd recorder if you need it updated (search in google for firmware for you model & lok forthe latest firmware update).
i dont know if this is any use to you but does have links for firmware - http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=87417
or - http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php
your laser could also be dirty & may need cleaning or it could be laser adjustment. also yours is a version 12 & these were known to have problems with the lasers "burning out" do all your original games work ok? do you have a warranty still?
as for bookmarking i've only heard of it with DVD+R but if you do a search i have seen forums that tell you all about it.
the only issue i've had with games crashing were caused by cheap media or DVD+R disc have caused me problems. hopefully you will find someone with the same drive as you who can give you more info.

All of my original ps2 games work fine. The warranty is no longer valid also but i've just cleaned the laser with some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip. I'll have to try the taiyo yuden DVD-R (8x) discs, i'll just burn them at 1x to make sure all the info transfers properly. I've been burning at 2x (with lower quality discs), i assume the slower it burns then the less chance for errors or blank spots on the dvd? I've tried the firmware and nothing happened, i couldn't find a good download. I'll just go with the new discs and hope that sorts out the issue. Once again thanks gjl2002. Much appreciated ;-)
