I've got home movies on DVDR's. The movies are already on DVDRs so I don't need to transfer them from tape to the PC.

I want to edit them, add menus, transitions, fades, music, etc.

1) I need software to convert DVDRs to MPEG-2 to enable editing using good/popular video editing software, as most video editing software deals with MPEG-2 encoded movies.

2) I need software that offers nice, easy, simple-to-use editing features. I'm pretty good with software so it doesn't have to be too simple. :)

I don't need anything too fancy, just a touch of the professional look.

If I can find one piece of software that can do both number 1 AND 2, then it'll be much better for me.

I would appreciate recommendations of the best, or most comfortable, everyone's favourite or the easiest freeware AND commercial software that can be used for the above.

Many thanks. :)

I'm not a Junior... it just looks that way. :)

I haven't used dvdrs yet with this, but I've tried quite a number of software pkgs for video/slide show presentations. I do use some movie clips in them as well. The one I found most impressive by far in all aspects including video/sound editing, transitions etc., all of what you've mentioned - was proshow gold/professional. Unfortunately the evaluation version is marked (rather annoying). I'd be interested to hear what you think of it if you try it.

I recently did a wedding DVD for my nephew and had alot of diffrent video files to edit togther. (VHS, MPEG2, VOB) I tryed alot of diffrent programs with alot of problems with audio out of synch etc etc.

I finaly sat down and looked at what i uasly use to recode AVI files to DVD. (Nero Vision Express) I finaly figured out I could do everything I wanted with it. Making a Menu with Sound, Changing the VOB to an MPEG2 file so I could join video clips togther.

1 Example...

I had 1 large MPEG2 file of the Reception. During the reception people where giving advice and saying a few words to my nephew and his new wife. so that was spread over the full reception with dancing cutting the cake, the throwing the Bouqete and garter etc etc.

I wanted to take all the parts of people saying words of wisdom and encourigment and cut them out of the full file and join them togther and then join the other stuff in the reception toghter. making 2 diffrent files 1 of the reception (dancing, cutting the cake etc etc) and 1 file of friends and family giving them messages.

Worked perfect using Nero Vision Express.

I also had a mini-dvd of the wedding that the brides mother took. I needed to edit some of that into the reception as well. So all i did was exported the mini-dvd into an MPEG2 file with Nero Vision Express and then edited the MPEG2 file like I did the other stuff.

The final DVD had a menu with thier wedding song playing as the menu music. with buttons on the menu to choose what they wanted to watch (Rehearsal dinner, wedding, reception, Words from family and friends)

So I would suggest getting Nero Vision Express and sit down and mess with it and learn how to do all this stuff. It was actully simple to do.

larrylje,

Great info, I didn't know one could do all of that with Nero. A few months ago I downloaded Ulead software and coverted my mini-DV's to DVD format and burnt it to a disc, with no menu's.....the whole thing was an ordeal, mainly due to their documentation was so poorly done. I had used their 30-day trial, and luckily I was able to accomplish the task well within the trial period.

Thanks for info,

Rich
