How long does it take you guys to analyze and encode using DVD shrink with an original movie? It's taking me a little more than 2 hr. I just got and external recorder (lite-on sohw-1693) I use dvd shrink, AnyDVD, Nero 7 and dvd decoder if needed. I know it takes longer but is this normal for everyone else. Oh yeah I use Windows XP sp 2, Pentium 4. Anything else you need to know? Thanks.

Time for Ripping/encoding with Shrink depends upon how much compression will be needed. Much faster top do "movie only" at 100% than the entire DVD with all the original features. Rip for movie only at 100% takes under 30 min and burning at 4X ads another 15 min.

I usually compress the movies to 60%, everything(menus, extras...) And it takes me forever! I don't know at what speed it is ripping. Either way it seems like it is taking me too long, any ideas why?

Takes me about 45m - 1h to do a full disc (menus, extra's, etc)

and 10-15 to burn.

More compression = more time. Try doing a movie only at 100% and see if it takes 25 min or so. If that turns out to be the case, you'll know that it is the extra compression that prolongs the encoding.

And the quality settins.

Deep Analysis - an extra 10-20 minutes

AEC options - depends on what your options are but about 20 extra minutes.

Not for sure, but I believe I read that external writers can sometimes take longer (especailly if you only have a USB1).

Also, is your DMA on: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/295738

If not, that will make a huge difference.

Also I found that my overall time was reduced when I extracted the files to my computer first with DVD Decryptor than used shrink.

Are you doing other things on your computer while you are analyzing, encoding, burning, etc. That will lead to slower times and bad burns.

How much memory do you have? Processor?

1.Yeah the time is alot less if i do 100%
2.burning also takes me 10-15 min
3.DMA is alright according to guide
4.Processor is a Pentium 4 2.8 ghz, 512ram, 60gb, have 36gb free.

Just thought if this, I got and externl because my internal drive stopped working. I figured I wore it out becuase I was using too much. Upgraded to Nero 7 and the external drive. but before when I used the OEM drive with shrink the drive would open, I would pop the blank dvd in and that would be it. Now the OEM drive still opens up NOT the external and even when I close the OEM drive and open the external drive it will not recognize the dvd. I have a feeling that I have to shut down the OEM drive and make the external drive the primary. What do you think, related? Thanks for all the help.

If you have Nero 7, then just use Nero Recode 2, it's 2 times faster (more advanced) than DVD Shrink. Afterall, both Nero Recode 2 and DVD Shrink is from the same guy/creator.

Honestly, I believe that Nero Recode 2 (Advanced Analysis + High Quality Mode) does produced slightly better pictures than DVD Shrink (Deep Analysis + AEC) in my humble opinion, some may argue that they're the same. Furthermore, I have a 55" Widescreen SONY HDTV and I've noticed DVD Shrink's quality (Deep Analysis + AEC) is a little lower than Nero Recode 2 (Advanced Analysis + High Quality Mode).

However, the choice is yours.

alkohol,

Not to change the subject but do you use or have you tried rb/cce or hc? If not you really should give it a try. A lot of difference in video quality on my 52" HDTV between backups I used to make with shrink and backups I make with rb/cce especially on projects requiring a lot of compression. Definately worth the extra time required to encode. I compress 7+ gb folders all the time and really can't notice any loss in video quality.

beltline and D02BE,

Dma doesn't apply to external drives whether they are firewire or usb only those on an IDE channel (internal).

@Mort81

How's it going buddy? It's been a while, so how's your AVI projects coming up? Is the audio still out of syn? Did you ever tried the K-Lite codec pack that I sent you? Lots of questions huh... LOL

Anyways, yes... I have DVD Rebuilder (the free version) and arniebear did tried to give me how's his setup, but I'm too lazy to get it going. Actually, I never finished what I've started, bad alkohol. I just need some settings and a little tweak and I'll give it a go. The main thing is, I really hate 3 or 4 hrs to encode for a single movie only that's all. I've always wanted to try DVD R + CCE long ago, since the first week I'd joined AD.

Mort81, you're right. I brain farted the dma thing.

DO2BE - I've never had my drive open with DVDShrink. That must be a setting within shrink. I would still try extracting to the hard drive first and then analyze and encode the files from the hard drive. That seemed to speed up my processing and I know quite a few do it this way. Plus you save the wear and tear on your burner.

alkohol,

I gave up on the avi's. Most of the audio was out of synch on the files I was messing with. No big deal.

It takes rb/cce about 2 hrs on a 6.5 gb folder with my set up. Of course it would take less time on a smaller folder. You can set up rebuilder to batch process and do as many encodes as you want while you sleep or are at work.
