I use DVD Decrypter to rip and DVD Shrink to encode. VOBs extract just fine (tested by dragging and dropping into PowerDVD). IFO encodes properly (I think). When I try to burn IFO with DVD Decrypter I get the following message:

I/O Error!
Device: [1:0:0] NEC DVD_RW ND-3520AW 3.6
ScsiStatus 0x02
Interpretation: Check Condition

CDB: 2A 00 00 0D 2C 40 00 00 20 00
Interpretation: Write (10) - Sectors: 863296 - 863327

Sense Area: (didn't include #, if needed I will)
Interpretation: Power On, Reset, or Bus Device Reset Occurred

As you can tell from the error message I have a NEC 3520A DVDRW
I've flashed the firmware from NEC's website.
I only use Tayio Yuden (verified by DVD Identifier).

I've tried rebooting, burning at a slower speed (4x rather than 8X or MAX). It always seems to fail at the same point regardless of what IFO I try to burn to disc.

Burning numerous coasters in the last few days after successfully burning many backups is very frustrating.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You say IFO, but do you mean ISO? When DVD Shrink encodes a movie for burning with DVD Decrypter it creates and ISO image.

Decrypter can't even write IFO's, and Shrink can't make them. He must mean ISO.

Is it possible that your DMA for the burner got turned off?

Can't think of anything else unless your drive has some sort of problem.

Good luck,

Rich

The drive would most likely still be able to write in IPO mode though.

dvdsndict,

The results without being in DMA mode can be exactly what he is experiencing.

I know TY's are good, but have tried another brand? The file isn't too big is it?

How far does decrypter get before aborting, in other words, percentage remaining or time remaining? In Shrink, what is your Target DVD Size?

Regards,

Rich

I had a few Verbatim DigitalMovie DVDs that didn't work either.

the ISOs I try to burn are within the limit (4.3GB) I've specified in decrypter (according to bbmayo's guide).

seems that the burning process fails at the same point. not sure at what GB amount or time remaining, but when I look at the coaster I can see that the burned amount and the remaining blank space appears to be the same regardless of burn speed (4x - MAX) or ISO.

it's strange that I can rip VOBs without any problem. maybe the burner uses a different method when writing.

thanks to everyone so far for all the help - it's greatly appreciated.

I hate to say it, but it looks like your burner has had it.

I recently bought a Benq 1640 for about $40 US, and it does everything, including booktyping to DVD-ROM, which enables you to play on any standalone player, automatically. Plus, I burn at 8X on every disc....and it takes no more than 8 minutes to do it.

Good luck,

Rich

I thought that might be the case. Figured that if anyone could tell me it'd be people here. I've got a new NEC3550 coming in the next few days.

Thanks again for all the help.

Well, keep, in mind booktyping can be very important, however, one must purchase +R disc, since they are the only ones that can be booktyped (also called booksetting).

So if it not too late, make sure that new burner can booktype.

Best of luck,

Rich

I have the NEC 3540A and love it, if you are interested in hacked firmware let me know, I can point you in the right direction...NEC are unable to booktype with the firmware upgrade.

I have the 3550a as well and love it. It does a real good job. Hacked firmware from liggy and dees version 1y5 rpc1. Excellent results.

hey guys, I'm back.
bought a new NEC 3550 DVD burner. was able to burn one backup disc and now this one doesn't work. so, it must be something else.

on my system I'm running 3 hard drives
boot drive is 40GB
2nd drive is 120GB
3rd drive is 250GB

I have defragged each drive recently, as well as, run adaware and Spybot, MS anti spyware on each drive.

usually I rip with decrypter to the 3rd drive, then shrink and encode on the same drive.
I'm thinking that maybe I'll move the encoded ISO to the 2nd drive and try to encode there.

I haven't gone online to upgrade the firmware (if there is one) yet. figured I'd run it out of the box before I do anything else to the burner.

any help would be appreciated.

It looks like 1.05 is the latest firmware according to http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_search.php

You do have DMA on, correct?

Can't believe you are still having problems even with a new drive.

Good luck,

Rich

yes, checked the DMA on all my drives and it's set to DMA if available.
one thing I did notice was that my 3rd drive - a Maxtor 250GB is coming up as a SCSI drive even though it's not.
the Maxtor is the one where I store the ISOs before burning to disk.

dg0896,

Just out of curiosity, what does your guide have to do with gmbruin's problem with his drive, or in fact, this entire thread?
