haha...if only PS2's really did come with mod-chips built in...that would be so convenient and make life a lot easier wouldn't it! :)

Well, a simple answer to your question, NO. PS2's will never come with a mod chip built in if you buy it from a retail store. The only way you'll get a PS2 with a mod-chip in it is if you buy it from a video game store/website that sells pre-modded systems. Otherwise, no.

You do need a modchip to play copied/backup games but an alternative is to use the swap magic discs. Hope this helps, good luck!

yes, 2 real methods.
1. Swap Magic and a fliptop. Most people will claim this is the cheaper way to go, and initially it is. But over time it will end up costing you more each time you have to shell out the $35 to get a new set of discs when they get scratched up, or just out of date. It also has quite a few drawbacks like having to rebuild some games, having screen cutoff with games from different regions, Can't play DVD9 back ups, Hard to use with cheat discs, and swapping just plain sucks.

2. a good modchip like DMS4 Pro or Matrix Infinity
It will give you none of the problems i mentioned above.
It will however prevent you from being able to play some back up games online as they will detect the chip. They will not allow chips as they see them as a cheat device. If you are using the original game to get online then no problem. Disable the chip and use the PS2 as normal.

my suggestion is to go with a good chip unless you plan on doing a lot of online gaming. And if you do want to game online you can always use something like Xlink Kai or XBConnect which do not give a hoot if you have a chip or not, and have many PS2 and Xbox games you can play others online at.
If you are not an expert with a soldering iron then save yourself the headache and just buy a V13 or V14 slim premodded.
Teammodders and Xmodd are 2 places i know that sell them.
