That's strange xp shuld automatically detect the psp. Does your usb card work with anything else? Try taking out the usb card and put it back in.

ps3 with 20gb hard drive

xbox 360 premium edtion with vga/hd hook up to my dell 20.1 inch widescreen lcd.

White and black 1.5 psp's

I'll take this down WHEN micro$oft decides to stop being lazy and make the capcom fighting games backwards compatible with the 360 dammit!!!

a coupla peeps are having this problem

my findings are as follows

take out every other device connected via usb to your computer (also you psp)
restart your computer
plug in your psp and go into usb mode
the computer should now see it
this didnt help the last guy i told it to but try it anywya

if it didnt help you either

try a dif USB port (although you proabably tried it)

and try a differnt usb cable (althogh nothing looks wrong with it it may be shagged)

or more drasticly

format your psp memory card (not guarenteed to work)
or
buy a mem stick reader (not guranteed to work)
or
reinstall you notebook - (will work) :)

sorry i couldnt be more help

Thanks RL.
I tried all but 2(buying mem stick reader and buying new usb cable) and they didnt work. I plugged the psp successfully into the other comp in the house however that comp has a cd-rom drive which is why I cant use it. But that tells me it isnt the usb cable.
Now when you said reinstalling my notebook, you meant to reinstall windows right?

I had the exact problem. I was able to connect my PSP using the USB connection on my Laptop without any problems, however, I was not able to connect it to my PC. I searched everywhere and could not find a fix to the problem. I finally was able to fix it myself. Here is what you do. This will only work if you are able to connect it to another computer/laptop. Once you have it connected to the computer that recognizes the psp, right click on my computer, click on hardware, click on device manager, go down to the usb connections and right click on the one that says usb mass storage device, go to properties, click on driver, click on driver details. in the window you will see where the driver is. for me it is: c:\windows\system32\drivers\usbstor.sys
Now just go to that folder and copy the usbstor.sys file. If your computers are networked, just paste it to the computer (same folder as above) that the psp can't connect to. If they are not networked, maybe you can email it to yourself or save it to disk. Once it is in your other computer, just connect the psp to the usb and go through the wizard steps. the computer should now detect the driver and install/recognize your psp.
It worked for me first time.
hope this works, because it is frustrating

niembre, thanks.
but it didnt help. the files it said my desktop used were ...system32/drivers/partmgr.sys and ...system32/drivers/disk.sys
i copied both these files to the corresponding folder on my notebook.
Nothing.
It was still saying my device wasnt recognized.
So I went and copied /drivers/ubstor.sys since u said that was what worked for you.
Nothing.
It was still saying my device wasnt recognized.
Then I went as far as taking all of my f*ckin usb drivers and copying them to my notebook.
Nothing.
This is frustrating beyond belief.
Thanks anyway, if anyone else knows something help a bro.

bro, check your windows first, if you use xp make sure it already SP2 (Service Pack 2), i think your windows has not yet been upgraded to SP2 so that your PSP not recognice by your PC.

and make sure on your PSP you switch to USB Mode ;)

me it's me not somebody else!!

I most certainly know to put the psp in usb mode. if i didn't do that It wouldnt tell me that something isnt recognized. And Since I couldnt reinstall windows , i reinstalled windows service pack 2 a number of times. Not to mention, the other computer it works on has neither service pack one or two. Weird right? But true. I don't have a clue on what the f**k to do.

Try this out: Instead of doing the automatic setup in the wizard. Select the option of browsing yourself, and choosing what driver to use. just select the folder c:\windows\system32\drivers\usbstor.sys (or whatever the driver that your other computer uses) I think this was the way I did it and it worked.

niembre , Not shure if you noticed there but Joeva has already said that it didnt work for him the first time dude . Not trying to rag on ya or nothing !

and Joeva honestly as far as i can see , Your # 1 and probably only option now is to reinstall windows . You said it was a error with the " usb port " not the " device " that means there is absolutly nothing wrong with your psp . It means there is 1 a problem with the usb plug or 2 there is a problem with your OS and you need to reinstall ....

I may be wrong , But its just common sense ;)

3 things..

1st. I did contact sony, scandisk and compaq/hp. here is the email from sony
Quote:
Hello Joeva,
Thank you for writing us.The PSP(TM) portable entertainment system can connect to a computer using a USB connection becauseit can be accessed as a standard USB Mass Storage device. The computer must have an operating systemthat supports USB Mass Storage devices. This includes Windows XP Home/Professional, Mac OS X, andothers. When using operating systems that do not come with support for USB Mass Storage devices, you may need to download additional software or drivers to enable support for these devices. Werecommend contacting the manufacturer of your computer or operating system (i.e. Microsoft, Apple, etc.) for additional assistance.
Sony Computer Entertainment America, Inc. (SCEA) does not require a proprietary driver for the PSPsystem to be recognized by your computer. If your operating system does not recognize the PSPsystem, you will need to download a standard USB Mass Storage device driver that is appropriate toyour particular operating system. Although the PSP system can be used as a USB Mass Storage device, device drivers for this class of peripherals are not part of SCEA's product line; please consultwith the manufacturer of your operating system for the proper USB driver download. If you have further questions regarding this message, please refer to your email casenumber:3216990.

2. I actually have the driver needed. I actually wasted time contacting Sony. This has nothing to do with the Psp. I did the research and found out that its the memory stick you are accessing and the psp other than having the usb mini port serves no other purpose. Furthermore, to access the memory stick you need C:/windows/system32/drivers/usbstor.sys as niembre said. And my computer does have that file. So idk what is wrong with it. HP says reinstalling my Os wont help and that it is the memorystick itsself. which isnt true cause I tried the 32mb stick from my other psp and the my 1gb and still nothing.

3. Th_kuyr umm i cant reinstall windows

Yes i understand you have said you cant find your Installation disk . I was simply pointing out the fact that its gonna end up being your only option . And once again i stand by my words . You would not recive the error that your usb port malfunctioned if it was a problem with the device .

Try to get ahold of one of your friends OS Installation Disk's or continue looking for yours . But eather way your gonna need to install windows to see if it is an enternal problem . If it continues to occur i think you need to do somthing about your PSP System <---- But i highly doubt that .

Good Luck !

I cant reinstall windows for another reason. Cause if that was the case id use the reinstallation cd from my other comp. The fact is my whole cd package is missing for my notebook, which means I wouldnt be able to use the touch mouse if i didnt reinstall the driver.. and i kinda dont wanna go through that.. I mean I've gone without a mouse once for 2 weeks but I don't want to go down that road again.. ya kno. I went to my friends house and loaded my shit up the other day. It took me 2 hours to get there but it was worth it. So im good for like a week, but i really need to get this shit fixed. Doing a 2 hour trip to add/remove games everytime is gonna piss me off.

you need windows xp service pack 2 installed and a legal version of windows xp

also your laptops own usb ports may not have enough power to correctly read the psp you need a powered usb hub powered by a ac adapter that should fix your problem

John .. Yes I have a legal version of windows and yes I have service pack two. But if you read a lil higher in the thread you would have seen that the computer it works on actually doesnt have service pack one or two on it. i never bothered to install it on there and yet it still works..
Piece thanks for helping me and suggesting that. I was going to going to do that(although i really didnt want to). My notebook has 2.0 ports and my desktop 1.1 ports which is another reason i didnt want to.. but guess what..

I GOT THE MUTHAF**KIN THANG TO WORK

How you ask?

Well I was back on the phone with hp telling them that I was gonna reformatt my hard drive and i need a os cd and a cd w/drivers on it. And I ran through the problem with them.[fyi their customer service sucks beyond comprehension, like seriously mentally handicapped people would make better customer reps]I happened to get a guy who had a psp this time that I called and he was dumbfounded as to what the problem was. The fact that it works on my dell and that one doesnt even have sp 1 or 2 and this one had sp2 told him that it wasnt the os at all, and that doing this was completely unneccesary. usbstor.sys is the file needed and this laptop has it. He said that because it works on my desktop the only thing that could be wrong is the usb hub itsself.

So you think that the usb hub was the problem?

WRONG!, think again

The fact remains that it would recognize other devices, such as my sidekick 2(cellphone/pda hybrid) which uses the same type of usb to mini cord. For some reason it just wouldnt recognize my friggin msp duo/psp. We ran a diagnostics on the usb ports and they were all fine. We tried a buncha shit for almost an hour and got no where. So finally we got off the phone. Obviously im pissed. He told me he didnt know what the problem was. He said
It wasnt the Computer
It wasnt the os or the service pack.
It wasnt the Usb hub
It wasnt the usb cord
It wasnt the psp
It wasnt the msp duo

Im sitting thinking, well then WHAT THE %#$ IS THE PROLLEM!

so what did it end up being...

the first thing that i listed that wasnt the problem in my original post. (scroll up to my original post for a laugh)

.

Yup, the usb cable . I was on another site tryna figure why my psp wasnt working. This guy said that he bought a third party usb cable and his wasnt working but when he plugged the one from his digital camera it worked. I never payed any mind to this post cause it worked on my desktop computer so i figured nothing could be wrong with the cord.. I didnt think the cord was gonna be the problem but I was like let me buy a new cord and see if thats it, cause if not i was gonna buy a DVD-R drive(24X). Went to ebgames bought a 2in1 usb cable/charge.. got home expecting it not to work... but the sh*t worked. Weirdest experience ever i swear. Im just glad its over.
Aint that some sh*t tho. I dont even wanna try and figure out why it worked on my computer and not my notebook.
Thanks to everyone that tried to help it was apprecitated btw
