I just put together a barebone kit (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details....) After putting in all of the parts it appeared to work fine. I plugged it into the moniter and it worked fine. Next it began to boot the harddrive (one that already had windows xp on it) But it gave me a blue screen saying that the harddrive failed. So it turned off the computer then turned it back on and now the computer will just turn on for a couple of seconds then shut off.

Anyone know what is wrong? I tried taking out the ram, replacing the PSU, and unplugging everything (CD-ROM, Floppy, HDD, Fans(not cpu fan), Modem, Video Card.) However it still has the same problem.

Someone please give me an idea of what I can do to fix it. It must be the CPU or Mobo, but that does not make sense because they are brand new!

Unplug the system, and remove the BIOS (CMOS) battery. Wait about 30 seconds. Plug everything back in, and if you can get into the BIOS, set the system to boot from CD. Run XP setup, and remove all the partitions. When you choose to format, do a standard, not quick format.

If you want to test the hard drive, download the diagnostic disk from the manufacturer's website, and test it from another machine.

If removing the battery doesn't reset the bios take out your manual find the cmos bios pins and follow the directions in you manual to reset them in many of the new boards removing the battery just doesn't work.

Hmm, well I removed the battery then put it back in and that did not do anything. I used the Clear Cmos pins and it still doesn't work... I suspect there might be something wron with the processor. All of the parts are brand new! I don't know why these don't work. I have previously built three other computers and they work fine...

Well the reason I think it is the processor is because I tried taking out the processor and running the computer. It does turn on and it just sits there. Could I possible had applied the heat spread incorrectly? I have never had to put that stuff on before. There was no manual for the gel so I put a thin coat on the heat sprea of the CPU fan, then a thin coat around the processor.

Hmm well if anyone has another idea please reply.

sound like you did ok with the heat spead, do you have another processor around that you could try? you may also have a short in one of the wires from you power supply wiggle them (lol) just to be sure and make sure they are seated into the mobo. I know sounds ridiculous but it happened to me once.

No I don't have any processors. Only AMD 64 bit ones and I don't think this mobo can handle them. I have tried three separate PSUs now so I don't think that is the problem. Well I guess I am gonna have to exchange the part. Hopefully it is the CPU and not the motherboard.

Asus A8N-SLI Mobo
AMD X2 64 4400+
2 Gig 3200 Ram
250 Gig HDD
Nvidia 7800GT 256MB
600 Watt PSU
