Hey there, the dvds I burned are starting to skip a lot now. This is how it goes, I make the copy using dvd-shrink. Then I try it out on my computer and watch the movie, throughout the movie, there are certain times the dvd will stop as if it was on pause for like 10 seconds, then it will continue but a couple of seconds forward. It used to happend probably a couple of times in the movies, but now it is like every 10 to 15 minutes. My info is in my sig. I've had the burner for about a year now. I don't run anything while the computer is burning and I burn at 4x since the dvds I use only accept 4x.

You have a lite-on, have you run a scan on the dvd's?

What speed are you recording at?

These problems normally exist with bad media, but It saids you're using TY's so I wouldn't think it was the media. Where'd you buy them? Is there a chance they're fake?

When you are burning, make sure all spyware, virus software, etc. are closed. Do not use the computer while burning. These are things that can also lead to what you seem to be experiencing.

i've got a better solution......
ID your media and post the results to verify they are the real deal, and is your firmware up to date.??
do you have the BSOY firmware for that litey?
i have the same one, and i use TY's from time to time, no problems...

This is what appears on DVD Decrypter. Oh, yeah, I cross flashed my firmware so it shows that I have a 1653s CSOM lite-on. I have been doing this for a while, just started to happen recently that it skips very often. I think it may have something to do with my cpu being used while burning, but I pretty much turn everything off except for my antivirus. I don't think it should matter though, because I always have it on, even before when I didn't have any problems. Just happening recently and it is very annoying. I bought the dvds from SuperMediaStore. Taiyu Yudens, I always buy them from super media.

Do perfectly normal disks go bad? Even if there are no scratches present? i.e. do they wear out?

Being as the discs are TY's it is good media. You can normally burn a TY at the rated speed, however some here recommend that you not burn over 1/2 of the rated speed. Try a burn at 2x on the 4x media and see what happens.

Have you defraged your hdd lately and do you run an antispyware/adware program regularly? Try some good quality DVD+R media and booktype them dvd-rom with the lite-on booktype utility. Here's a link. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=83441 There's also a link to a usage guide on that page.

Hi Akazecks..

I'm a little confused on your so called Cross flashed firmware? I have the 1633s and I just updated my firmware about 2 weeks ago to DR16BSOY from Liteons download firmware page. Mine is working great and I also use Shrink and Decrypter. Are you sure you can do what you did and still have it work OK. Maybe you should see if you can change it to the 1633s firmware I use? Just trying to help.

Rich.

Mort81 is DEfINITELY the man to turn to as he has crossflashed HIS SOHW-1633S to the 1653S and from his tales of dvd burning, he's been VERY successful in his backups~ :)

i have the reg. Liteon 1633S, i haven't cross-flashed mine as i haven't personally found the need to (it's on my 2nd computer and i only REALLY "tweak" firmware/flashing on my main comp- which now has the Benq-dw1640 and my hacked Pioneer dvr-109 w/ buffalo firmware for bitsetting residing in there) :)

i do have the newest firmware for the Liteon 1633S, which IS the BSOY as Richdee mentioned, dated 12/23/05, and i burn TYG01s on ALMOST a DAILY basis...i'm a big fan of Taiyo Yuden if you didn't already know that... :)

i naturally burn the TYG01s @4x as for this Liteon drive, that is as fast as it will go...on my other drives, i CAN overburn them faster...

sounds like to me you MIGHT have gotten a few bad discs in your last batch/spindle OR you might think about cleaning the lens on your 1633s, Akazecks...but one thing for certain, DO NOT lower your burn speed...Taiyo Yudens especially, they DO NOT produce a better quality output if you burn too slow, i have thousands of TYs burned as proof of this...i burn my 8x TYs @8x and do slow it a bit down on the 16x Taiyo Yudens,i burn the 16x @8x too, as i personally feel the TYG03s are not as good as the TYG01/TYG02, but that's just a PERSONAL opinion...i haven't used nearly as many TYG03s as i have the other 2 in the DVD-R format, but, from my own experiments with media i get far better quality scans from my TYG01/TYG02 than i do with my TYG03s... :)

another thought/suggestion might be how much compression are you using when you use dvd-shrink? if the compression is TOO high, meaning like 50% or more, i too have experienced slight pauses on TYG01 media...this has nothing to do with burn speed, but too much compression might possibly ADD to the issues you are experiencing here...or might be the REASON you get these pauses...also, when you use shrink for this backup, do you use the AEC and deep analysis settings? those SHOULD improve the quality of your backup as well...

Mort81 knows MUCH more than i would about how the cross-flashed 1633S performs as the 1653S, but i just thought i would throw in a few possibilites/suggestions as to what MIGHT be giving you these pause issues...good luck

docTY~

Thanks. Actually, I used to get perfect burns when I first bought the burner and was using some DVD+R media. I switched to Taiyo Yudens and then I started to see that I was getting a couple of skips here and there in the movies, but nothing too bad. Now, my dvds just pause and then start up again a couple of seconds later. Not only that but just ten mins ago I tried to watch a dvd I made on the komp and after the intro it just stopped playing. I had to go to the menu manually to access the movie and the movie still pauses. I have the latest firmware and I burned that dvd decryptor since it was less than 4.7 gigs. I usually have the movies compressed in the 70's and up whenever possible.

Akazecks,

I too have my SOHW-1633S crossflashed with SOHW-1653S f/w and it actually made my drive a better burner. When I first started burning verbatim MCC003 dvd+r's with it my backups would not play back on my set top dvd player period, it gave me an error message. After scanning them with kprobe I noticed there were high pif and pie spikes at the very start of the scan. I then used the eeprom utility to reset my eeprom and it has worked flawlessly ever since.

You can find a link to the eeprom utility on the same page with the booktype utility. Try an eeprom reset but save the old eeprom settings in a folder somewhere you can find it in case the reset makes it worse (which I doubt it will) and you need to load the old eeprom settings back in.

@Doc

LOL... Again, I couldn't have said any better.

@Akazecks

The only thing I could think of is maybe it's an ARccOS or RipGuard protections which can trigger pauses or freeze if you didn't completely removed the dummy cells or fake sectors. Some of the latest movies such as The Cave, The Fog, Wedding Crashers, Dark Water, Brothers Grimm etc. will freeze or pause during playback at certain scenes if you did not removed the dummy cells completely with VobBlanker 2.1.0.0.

I may be wrong, but just a side note to inform you that's all.

hmm.. I'll keep that in mind. I already reformatted my komp. Im not home right now, but when I get everything up and running I will make another burn and test burn. I will try first a normal burn, then with the eeprom utility then with vobblanker. In that order unless it works with one or the earlier.

lol, Memorex, where did that come from?...lol..
