Okay, I know I can legally make a backup Dvd-R of a movie I currently own (purchased).

What about those that don't have a dvd burner or don't know how to make a back-up?? Can they have someone make them a back-up and still have everything be legal? Can this person, who is making the back-up, charge a fee for this service? (of course, proof of ownership of an original will need to be established) What if this person didn't charge, any difference?

Or are you just out of luck if you don't have a dvd burner or don't know how to make back-ups?

Not trying to get around any loopholes...but i was asked this question and I didn't know the answer.

Thanks guys!!

Hi,
I am quite aware that some countries are even making it illegal to make backups of your own original DVD's, even for your own purposes (I believe), because it may lead to you lending it to someone else. Also, I don't believe you can charge someone a fee to be able to burn them (make a backup) copy of a DVD, that they have bought. Anyways, you will not be able to directly copy from DVD to DVD because DVD-9's are expensive and the DVD's that you buy from the store are DVD-9's, so you will have to remove extras and compress, so I am not really sure if that is allowed or not. Maybe someone here has a little more expertise on this than I do? I would like to know this also.

Regards,
DiRect

Knowledge is imminent...

I'm not looking into doing this, I just found the question very interesting. It seems like a simple enough question, but I couldn't answer it. My gut instinct was that he couldn't get someone to make him his back-ups. But....it also didn't seem right that he couldn't have a back-up of his purchased movies, but I can, just because HE doesn't own a burner.

hi :)
it is illegal to make a copy (backup) of any disc, even if you have purchased it.
the moment you try to circumvent a copywrite you are breaking the law
