hey,

im looking to upgrade my PC and was looking at AMD X2's. I looked at some benchmarks and with gaming it at par with AMD 64 series (3500-4000+)

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2410&p=7

my inital thought is that because the games were not programmed to take advantage of a dual core CPU?

is this correct?

if so I presume the benchmarks will eventually change once dual-core become more common and are programmed based on them?

thanx,

navi95

Dual cores, running single apps will be on par with single core CPUs. Ex:, an X2 3800+ running Far Cry, will perform almost exactly the same as it's single 3800+ counterpart.

However, if you're going to spend the money, go dual core. You will find it handy when it comes to doing more with the same system. Such as playing your game, and in the background, encoding a DVD.

I find the duelcore works much harder and faster than a single core in general. If you are gonna upgrade go for the best you and your system can afford at the moment. If you don't you will regret it.

thats what I thought.....

I do encode a lot of video for DVDs which is time consuming and my parents moan at me since they cant use the pc properly due to high CPU loads...

think dual core it is, just gotta save my money up now.....

thanx for the confirmation

as it is at the moment i would personally say that there isnt much pioint buying an AMD dual core... not because i think theyre crap or anything there actually quite good. but very soon the revised dual cores will be released on a new socket 940 board and they will have support for ddr2 which means the overall performance of the systems will be drastically improved. as it stands at the moment amds cores max out with 400MHz DDR but the new cores will go as high as DDR2s maximum speed which i believe is around 1000MHz (possibly higher) which is more than double what cores do at the moment.

so my advice is go for dual core... just not yet

well originally the plan was (as i understood) that the new cores would be coming out this month so id imagine that they will be fully rolled out by the summer.

i know what you mean though about how quickly the technology changes.. its impossible to stay on top. when i first built my system it was top of the range.. espescially the processor, it was the fastest AMD out at the time (not including opterons) yet just a few months later the Athlon 64s were bought out at nearly the same price as id just paid for my Athlon XP so as you can imagine i was quite disapointed.

i think you should be safe though with the new dual cores when they come out as they are what all the other processor AMD bought out over the past year or so have been leading up to. and all the new motherboard will have the latest technologies on such as PCI-Express, SATA2 and DDR2. and with the amount of power one of these dual cores will have you wont need to worry about upgrading for quite a while

think im gonna set like a £1000 for updating best CPU, Mobo and RAM and then GPU etc.

should be more than enough to have a solid system that wont be outdated *hopefully* too soon.

Ive been lookin on ebay and ive seen an auction on ebay for a "AMD Opteron 165 939 dual core" which can apparently be oc'd too near FX-60 speeds. Would sumthin be like this be worth getting for £215?

I say upgrade when you can afford it. But when you do upgrade don't skimp on anything. Other wise you just wasted your money.

Im gonna get new mobo, CPU, RAM and Graphics card. Im happy with the rest of my system. May get faster DVD-R/RW as I got mine when they first came out and does max of 2x. Defo get a nice case as well, and if i got enough money a nice 19" TFT or I was thinkin of gettin a nice big 32inch LCD TV, possibly bigger if it gets cheaper by the summer, for my room and could maybe hook it up through that with DVI or sumthin.
