Using 8x Media in 2.4x drive

I am using a Sony DW-P50A 2.4x drive in my laptop and I just recently picked up a pack of TDK 8x dvds. There is a warning on the package that it is only recommened for 8x and higher drives. I know there are some firmware upgrades available and they dont really say whether or not these 8x discs will work. Can anyone help me out with a way to find out so I wont "damage my drive" like the package says?

They will work in your drive. if there is a firmware update install the update they will not damage your drive if you do not have the latest firmware your drive may not reconize the discs so install the latest firmware

Do the firmware upgrade to support newer media & burn speeds assoc. but TDK isn't that good anyhow and may cause issues like burn errors and playback issues. IMO I would return them and pick up some fuji or sony (made in japan) or verbatim.
