@BurningAs
Here's my rule of thumb - 1/2 of what a good burner supports as long as the media supports it. Example 16x media on a 16x burner - 8x max. I mainly use Taiyo Yuden 8x or higher but only burn at 8x - never max.
I mainly use a Pioneer DVR 108 & a Liteon SOHW 832S. Since the liteon's an 8x max I never burn higher than 4x on it.
So far no problems and I have discs a few years old.

I burn @8x with a pioneer 110D using Ritek G05...No probs' and until my stock goes down, that's as fast as I'll go.

I'm not gonna lie, I've gone through two 25 pack spindles (in other words, 50 lol) at 16x. Result? No problems. I understand the caution but I don't think the world will end if you burn at 16x lol. I only use Verbatims or TY's. That always helps.

I've since gone back to 8x only because that's what was being offered for the TY's lol.

Also, my two liteon burners (1673 and 1635) are always up to date. When compressing, I always set the target size at 4300.

All that translates into no known issues.

Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

ya ur best bet is either x4 or x8. i personaly use x8 /w my Verbs even though my burner suports x16 and my Verbs r garunteed at x16.
i actualy found /w my burner, that when i did a simulation that it went faster on x8 than x16, go figure. oh yah ive never heard of x1... what type of burner and DVDs r u using?

Funny how all us "old timers" all end up doing pretty much the same thing with the same media for the same reasons.

I burn 8X T-Ys at 4X for the most part. Occcasionaly I get in a hurry and burn them at 8X. Never a problem at that speed.
I get a default max speed of 12X with my Pioneer 109 which I accidentally started a burn at. It made a fine coaster about 1/3rd of the way through the burn.

I use those 8X T-Ys instead of the 16X because they are cheaper. For everything else I always use the 1/2 labeled speed rule.

If you got a Benq 1640,then you gotta be cautious of the slower speeds. I found that out the hard way with the Verbatim +16x MCC-004 media. Sometimes I leave a movie burning to autoshut down,so I kept the burn speed at 2.4x.
Well, when I needed to re-rip that copy, too many crc errors and re-copying was no option.I had a couple more of these 2.4x backups with the same issues.

After scanning for errors on: 2.4x/4x/8x/and 12x: 8x had the fewest errors,12x just a hair behind,4x was way out of line,2.4x was very ugly. I go with the burn at 8x on quality media.

I'm in no rush either, just I want my backups to be as error-free as possible.

Hey! Am I the only guy who ever tried burning at 6x? I have been using only genuine TY (GO2) media for some time now, they show up as 12x max on my nec 3540a. I used to burn at 4x but I figured why not try 6x. Well 200+ burns later and not a single coaster! B.W.

I just went through 200 TYG02 (8X) and burned them at 8X, 12X and 16X, mostly 16X when I was using Nero Express 7 since that was all it would let me do. Scans of the 8X burns were slightly better but scans of the 12X and 16X were certainly acceptable. I generally used 12X when I had a selection since the burn time is only a few seconds longer with 12X than 16X. Nero CD/DVD Speed usually gave me a 97-99 quality score even at 16X. I am not recomending that anyone should do this. It works for me as long as I use high quality media. I seldom burn anything slower than 8X because I don't see any improvement at 4X or 6X. In fact, I think I get worse burns at those speeds. This is using my BenQ 1620. My Pioneer will only burn these at 12X. I have some Verbatim MCC03RG20 (16X) which I usually try to burn at 8X since they don't seem to be nearly as good as the TY.

lol I was nervous when I went through those. It sounded too fast lol. Like I said though, I went back to the 8x max TY's and Verbs. Besides, the elapsed time difference is not that great (8 and change versus 5/6 minutes).

And I'm real anal about my backups so it's not like I'm NOT looking for errors on those 16x burned discs.

I only tried these because it's so taboo lol.

If it means anything, the DVD players I use on a regular basis is a Magnavox 456 and a Sony something lol. The Sony one is older, but like I said, I haven't had any playback issues.

I burn like the rest of the older members at 1/2 the rated speed of the media and I'm using a Plextor and a Pioneer burners and I only use Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim blank media. I did though accidentally burn a movie at 12X and did a scan and to my surprise it came out OK

I burn at 16X all the time. Not for myself though. I use TY MIJ 8X media or burn my 16X at 8X.

When I do burn at 16X it's because my neighbor kid come down with his new movie(he does own them I make him show me the receipt). and I make him a copy so his little brother won't ruin the original.

Since I do this for free and don't charge for the DVD's after awhile it gets old so I jut burn at 16X and so far no problems.

Hey,

Rule of thumb for me is the slower the better. The slower you burn and less chance you'll have to get error on your dvd! I always burn at 4x and less and never got one bad dvd in all my life...

Maybe your right, but for my dvd's I always burned them at 4x and I dind't got one bad dvd in my life. I did test them with nero cd/dvd speed and they are all perfect 100% and no damage data after 1 year... I use only Maxell DVD+R 8x and Princo Corp. 4x dvd's.
I don't think I would burn them faster even if I could.
