Hello everyone
I have bought a Pentium 4 3Ghz processor socket 775 and it is over heating badly. It reaches 96C and I have 3 fans running in what is meant to be a cooling system case.
When I restart the system an error shows Processor temp high. I am not sure what is causing this. I checked and reinstalled it but the problem is still there. The motherboard is Asus P5WD2 Premium. I have not overclocked it, it is running on default settings.
Any help please....

If you put the heat sink and fan on the CPU you need to make sure it is on correctly. Also make sure that the heat transfer goop on the bottom of the heat sink isn't rubbed off. What is the CPU fan speed?

Thanks Destra
I have found out that there is a problem with the heatsinks and fans that come with Pentium 4 3Ghz processors, socket 775.
I looked at the paste and it is all there. I am going to strip the whole thing down, again, and try a different heatsink and fan.
I will find out what the fan speed and post back..

Got the temperature down to 45C. I uninstalled the CPU and when I put it back I made sure it was down properly. I also used an air duct to filter the heat out of the computer completely.
Tidied up all wiring and now the temp is between 45C and 52C much better than 96C.

Clearly, for whatever reason you previously did not have good contact and good heat-transfer between cooler and CPU.
The hard, waxy/plasticky stuff that comes on some coolers when new actually works well - but it is a one-time product!
It will melt into place the first time it gets hot enough, but then if this 'seal' is broken by removing the cooler, it must be all scraped off and cleaned up and new compound (ie. ArcticSilver) applied.
Don't know what your new cooler uses, but just be aware...
Yes, heat is The Enemy (especially for you unfortunate Pentium4 users, LoL :^)

Thanks very much The_OGS

I will hopefully not have to remove it again. Do you by any chance know what temperature is considered average for pentium 4 3Ghz CPU'S.

Hi,
~50C is good, high forties (at idle - has a lot to do with your case and ambient room temperature).
Ideally would stay below ~60C at full load.
96C bit too high...
(keep the fire extinguisher handy :^)

im supried your computer is even still alive after running that hot.

were you keeping it in a volcano or something - lol

intels tend to run pretty hot compared to most processors (its rumored that if they carried on the way they were going that they wouldve eventually been giving off as much heat as a thermal reactor :O ) but they can also withstand the heat better than most processors aswell.

your lucky you didnt have an AMD system as if youd not installed the fan properly on an AMD chip then it may have been a lot less forgiving.

Studio Comp: AMD Athlon XP 3200+ OC ~ 2.35GHz runs at 40 celcius idle and 48 under stress (aerocool GT1000 really works!), Asrock K7VT4A , 1024MB Dual Channel DDR 400, MSI Nvidia FX5200 128MB OC ~ 600MHz mem 350MHz core,80GB SATA + 200GB SATA + 120GB IDE, 7.1 Channel Soundblaster Audigy 2 Platinum EX sound and midi interface. 19" Sony SDM-HS95 TFT monitor - sweeet
Comp2: AMD Sempron 2400+ OC ~ 2.0GHz (Stable), Asrock K7S41GX, 512MB DDR 333, Onboard Graphics, 40GB Maxtor IDE

set of monitors on the way soon :P
Google is your friend...
WorkComp: LAPTOP, intel celeron D 2.4GHz, 256MB DDR, 20GB hd. NO SCREEN IT WAS SAWN OFF :S (bag of crap)

Thanks for the reply

I have been keeping an eye on the temperature and I previously had one fan off. So after I made sure that the CPU was in properly I connected the top case fan.
The case I have is a Lian Li 60 plus. Including the power supply fans I now have 6 fans running. The CPU temperature with some applications running was 59C but when it is idle it is 45C.
I built the computer myself and bought the Lian Li case thinking it would keep the CPU cool. I am not sure if this was a good idea now. As if the CPU was running at full I fear it may exceed the safe temperatures. This case has an air duct that is meant to force warm air out away from the CPU and cool air in. If I had put this CPU in a smaller case I really would'nt like to think what would have happened.

Thank you everyone I have now got the CPU to a stable 35C at idle. When in use mid 40s to mid 50s.
Finally found that one of the push down pins on the CPU frame was'nt in all the way although I took it out and put it back, so I used force and heard it click.
I normally try to be gentle but this time I took a chance. Thanks again.....
