First off, here's all the info about the question im going to ask... i copied it from your ideal post so hopefully you'll all be willing to help me since i did it the "right way" lol :P

Name of Game: anything
Game Region: PAL
Media Make: Taiyo Yuden (-r)
Media ID: TYG02
Disc Max Speed: 8x
Speed of Burning: 4x
PS2 Modification: magic pro 7 (i think..the guy who
did it wrote that on the invoice)
PS2 Version: V12
Game acquired: original disc
Rebuilded: Yes and No
Rebuilding Software Tools mentioned in alkohols guide to gt4
Burning Software: DVD Decrypter
DVD burner: MSI ATAPI DVD RW 8XMax (firmware 160D)

Problem:
I've been reading around the forums to try and find an answer before i posted, but havent been lucky enough to.

My problem is that all my games work fine, but they load slowly.. i mean.. really slowly. Compared to the original it can take up to 2-3-5 minutes longer (depending on what is loading). Not only that but the sound in game takes time to load (eg. playing tony hawks underground 2 - while the music swaps tracks, or voices play etc).

I'm only new to ps2 backing up, but i have a fair bit of pc knowledge, so i've picked it up pretty quickly, but i would like to know if:
a) everyone has this problem and its just part of the trade-off of protecting your originals
and;
b) do people find that using a dvd burner that can change the book type to dvd-rom makes games work better/faster?

Basically, i want to get my games loading faster, not only for my convenience but to extend the life of my ps2 laser as well, but I want to avoid have to go out and buy a new dvd burner to do so.
My biggest problem is that none of my friends have dvd burners, and none of them have chipped ps2's either, so i have nothing else to test with/on except what I've got.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Yeah I think Sulaim may have went a little overboard with requiring all that info, but thanks for actually reading that thread. Did you get a laser fix installed with your Magic Chip? If not, your laser could be on it's way out. A modded v.12 PS2 requires a laser fix to keep the laser from burning out.

Note: v.12 PS2's will need a laser fix like the neo fix. This is necessary to keep the laser from burning out.

From KC36330, a professional modder and member of AD:

If your modder didn't install a laser fix then most likely your laser is now on its way out. All V12 PS2's require the laser fix, especially modded consoles. Even a new unmodded slimline v. 12 PS2 can burn the laser out in as little as a few hours of game play.

thanks for the quick reply.

hmm.. i'm not sure if they did the laser fix. he seemed to be quite professional and knew his stuff so i'd imagine he did, but there was nothing mentioned on the invoice so i'll give him a call tomorrow just to double check.

i got it chipped a couple of weeks ago now, and i've been playing a fair bit in my spare time and the laser is still kicking... *shrug*

if anyone else has had the same trouble as me it'd be great to hear from you and anything you've done to overcome it

Yeah definitely find about the fix, it could be the difference between frying your PS2 or not. If the guy claims the v.12 doesn't need a fix, he's full of mularkey. Every modder I've ever talked to has told me that the v.12 PS2 requires a laser fix. The Magic Pro isn't the greatest chip. Good Luck!

grrrrrr so it could be the chip maybe?
i thought a chip was a chip? they bypass the game/system's protection so as to allow it to be played?

definitely going to be ringing him in the morning.

thanks mate

No there is a definite hierarchy of modchips. The DMS 4 Pro SE, Matrix Infinity are the two best hands down. The Crystal Chip 1.1 is good. The Duo2SE is a decent budget chip, but it's not nearly as feature packed or reliable as the three I mentioned. Definitely find out about the laser fix. Hopefully this guy know's what he's doing. I don't mean to make you paranoid, but it is critical to find out.
