EDIT 3
Hey... I've answered my own questions below, and installed AC3Filter which has answered most of my questions! http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filte...

However, one still remains - I need to get this onto an iPod, and it won't play at all in Quicktime, where I need it to play before I tell it to convert to the device. How won't it play in Quicktime?

Many Thanks in advance (hopefully)

================================================================

Hi people... If any of you could help, I'd appreciate it. I've done some searching, but can't find the answer - so if this has been answered before, if you can point me to the correct threat I'd be grateful!

I've downloaded an AVI, but the audio won't play, despite having the codec on my machine. How does that happen?

With GSpot I checked the AVI and it's an XviD video codec (great, the video will playback in anything), but the audio is an Wave Format AC3 (and the audio won't play back with anything).

GSpot says a codec is installed for the audio, the Nero Digital Audio Decoder, but you don't hear the audio whenever you play it. I just don't get it... how does it not play audio? I tried to see if I needed to associate the codec with individual players, but have had any joy with that.

Any suggestions as to what I can do to hear the audio?

EDIT - I've worked out that it will play in Windows Media Player, it will play in Real Player without audio, and it won't play any audio or video in Quicktime, though it will play.

I need to get the video to play through whatever codecs would are most likely to be on a basic machine as I'll need to play this at work and can't install anything there.

Is this a case of I'll have to re-encode to simpler codecs? Or is that not possible and will I have to get a specific codec? If so, where do I get it and will that get it to play through Quicktime which is important (later I'll need to transfer this to someone's iPod).

Thanks - and sorry for so many questions!

EDIT 2 - Also, if it helps I have tried installing DivX player to see if it helps, and it wouldn't install (it was corrupted?) and tried VSO ConvertXtoDVD to see if I could just get it onto a DVD and start from that, but that also wouldn't install as it was corrupted?

Any idea?!?

Download Videora iPod Converter from http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/ Its free, and will convert all your videos to whatever format you want. There are a few good tutorials in the iPod forum sections on this site.

I'll see you on Xbox Live...mike814
