ok well first of all, I have the same ps2 and yes I have made many back ups. I use DVD+R discs and they work fine, I rip them using DVD Decrypter and burn them using DVD Decrypter. What I did because i had the same problem, slow discs reading after I put a burned discs in, choppy, hangs, and other problems. What I did was that I opened up my ps2 and cleaned the lens using a paper towel and barely touching it, just enough to make sure no dust was on there, then I took about the tray and cleaned that. You can use a can of compressed air or just take a slighty damp paper towel to clean it, but do not use a damp towel on the lens(might mess it up). If your ps2 has never been cleaned before trust me there is a hell of alot of dust in there, just clean it. The game that was choppy for me was Fatal Frame 3-The Tormented, but after cleaning the system out it works 100% better and my boot disc (swap magic 3.6) works alot better. Hope this helps

and slow gameplay might also because of crappy media.

Thanks guys, I figured it out finally...

I cleaned the laser, which was dirty.

I used different media and then presto!

Taiyo Yuden is bad, Fuji is a little better, but Memorex works like a champ!

As far as ps2 model #3001; Memorex cd and dvd work flawlessly.

You guys rock

Thanks

yeah i told you...the ps2 is old like mine but she works fine if you take care of her. Just clean her every now and then to get full performace from her.

I have a v.4 PS2 as well, chipped with an MI. DVD+R's are 50/50 for v.4 PS2's. I use Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's and they work perfectly. v.5 PS2's and later should work fine with DVD+R's. This isn't always true, each PS2 is different. It's always a good idea to booktype DVD+R's to DVD-ROM. This will improve compatibility with stand alone DVD players and your PS2. In general it's better to use DVD-R's with the PS2. The fact that he had success with Memosux and not TY's screams user error. If he had done everything correctly with TY's, most likely there wouldn't be any issues.

What's the Media ID of the discs you're using?

91. Q. What is the Media ID of a DVD and how can I find it?
A.The Media ID of a DVD is the true measure of it's quality. It contains prerecorded info about the disc's manufacturer. The quality of the disc will vary depending on the media code. The media code isn't visible on the disc or the packaging. To check the media ID, Open DVD Decrypter, insert your disc, and check what it says under Media ID or Manufacturer ID. You can also use a program called DVD Identifier which is very useful. You can find it here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id...
Last but not least you can use DVD Info Pro: http://www.dvdinfopro.com/
Compare the Media ID to this link: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

if using A Class media and cleaning the lens fail, one shud also rebuild the games.

10. Q. What does rebuilding an iso mean?
A. It means that some games 4.36-4.38GB's may need rebuilt to work with Swap Magic. This isn't true for ALL games over 4.38GB's and differs on a game to game basis. The main purpose of rebuilding is to shrink the game's Table of Contents (TOC-the size of the game) in order to boot it with Swap Magic. The TOC for the Swap Magic DVD is around 4.37GB's. There is no need to rebuild games if you have a modchip. Another purpose of rebuilding is to make games run smoother. Usually the size of the game after rebuilding is smaller, but not always. Some games have dummy files used to beef up the TOC and help them run more smoothly. A good way to lower the game's TOC is to overwrite a large dummy file. If you are having trouble getting a backup to boot, and you're sure the media isn't the problem, try rebuilding the game.

11. Q. How Do I rebuild games?
A. With Nero and Isobuster (works as long as no single file is over 2 GB's): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/197949
With CD/DVDGen: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/210515
With Expert (Gnie's new rebuilding tool):
Gnie's PS2 Auto Rebuilder Tool Download (Thanks to 3DLuis):
http://www.alucard.cc/ps2/ExPERT_v1.03.rar
Instructions to Gnie's Tool ExPERT From Paddymail:

Here's how to use it.. it might not work for all games though.

Open the program.

1. Select the Shrinker_ps2_psp_CdDvd5_iso.epi on the plugins drop down list.
2. Select the iso you want to rebuild.
3. Click extract LBA.
4. Click extract file and wait for it to finish.
5. Click rebuild file and wait for it to finish.
6. Click rebuild LBA.
7. Burn the new iso with Nero or DVD Decrypter as usual.

hmm i made a post a week or two ago stating all my specs and the problems i was having.

using tayo's~
8x max burned at 4x

version 12 ps2, still havent had time to ring the guy who did the chip to see if he did the laser fix (but like i said in my old thread, he is doing console mods as a business so i would imagine he did it, hes not just some backyard dude). i'll try and do that tomorrow.

the main game im having trouble with is tony hawks underground 2. i backed up ace combat 5 today and it seemed to be working fine but only had enough time to load it, not play it. so i will try and rebuild THUG2 and look for dummy files i guess, or something?

gt4 also plays slow (rebuilt it thanks to alkohol's guide) but the loading in it is nowhere near as bad.

thanks guys

You don't have to worry about dummy files. It's only important you overwrite dummy files if the game is really big, it's an easy way to downsize the iso.

Tokijin

Well ok, seeing that I am a newbie and you have posted a billion times here, thought I would try another test.

The game that did NOT work with Taiyo Yuden and did work with Memorex was 007 - From Russia with love.

So I tried a different image. 50 cent - Bullet Proof.
Used Alcohol120% with Taiyo Yuden and Memorex
Both disks work great? So is it the actual game that might cause the problem?

Taiyo Yuden can only burn as slow as 4X, where Memorex went as slow as 1X. Not sure if that had anything to do with it.

So I guess if one brand of media doesn't work, just try another brand until the game plays...

Thanks for the help guys

Sorry but that's true. That's not a knock on you, it just a general assessment from what I've seen. Almost everytime someone has complained about TY's not working, their firmware wasn't up to date, they weren't burning it correctly, or weren't using their Swap Magic/modchip correctly. User error isn't relegated to anyone who's labeled a noob, there's plenty of user error on my part when burning. Besides which, since that ranking is post based, you could know way more about the PS2 tnan I do. Maybe it was a defective TY. It happens, I'd say don't worry about it unless it happens outside of this one game. Btw, Memosux is terrible, the best you're going to get with Memosux is Ricoh/Ridata (okay media), the worst you're going to get is CMC Mag (yuck). If you have trouble getting a game to work on TY's, try it with Verbatim's. You can get 50 packs of Verb's at Sam's Club and other chain stores for $15.

ok i rebuilt fifa 06 and now i have a whole bunch of files.

original fifa 06 file 4.37GB
rebuilt fifa 06 file 2.81GB

along with the image i also have a folder with a whole bunch of files in it about 224 files in 18 folders. Now, the image of the rebuilt fifa 06 is 2.81 GB, and the total size of THAT folder is also 2.81 GB, so which one do i burn?

should i delete that folder and burn the new image?

Burn the rebuilt iso. Gnie's Expert gives you the individual game files and a rebuilt iso after rebuilding. Burn the rebuilt iso.

it is not becasue of media problems, it was becasue of your burn speed, i had the same problem when i burned gran turismo 4 i burned it at 4x speeed, the game was very choppy, i then burned it again at 1x and the game was fine. if you update your firmware maybe it will let you burn the Taiyo Yudens at 1x speed. i would recomed that you throw away the memorex media becasue later on the game that was burned on it will not work at all, becasue the dye will fade. it all depends on how any type of burner will handle the media. some burners don't like high speeds and some will only burn good at low speeds.

Not necessarily. Unless he has the same burner as you, you can't make that assessment. Cheap media is the number one fix for boot failures. If you have a new 16x burner, burning at 1x is rarely necessary. I get more Max PIE's burning at slower speeds. Burning games too slow can cause lags and skips in constant disc access games like Need for Speed: Most Wanted or San Andreas. I'm not saying that you're wrong, the problem could be burn speed, but he should rule out the media first. If that doesn't work, maybe it's the burn speed.

but thats what i am trying to say, for me, if i burn at high speeds i get very poor backups with choopy FMV's and gameplay, and if i burn at low speeds they are prefect with no chopping. and you can't really say he was using cheap media if he was using Taiyo Yuden. but obviously high speeds are not working for him. and i couldn't care less what PIE readings says becasue you can't compare all burners just becasue that particular burner said that the PIE reading was bad. it varies burner to burner, someone could get perfect burns at low speeds while someone with totally diffrent burner will get rubbish burns at low speeds.

Yeah I forgot he was using TY's. Too be honest, I still think there's a good possiblity of user error here. The fact he can get Memorex to work and not Taiyo Yuden is a dead giveaway. PIE's are a good indicator if a game will run okay, but certainly not absolute. For instance, I've read that Pioneer drives are awful for CD/DVD Speed scans, they're just not accurate. I've been told Litey's are excellent for PI/PO scanning. It is true that different burners have different levels of comaptiblity with various media/burn speeds. That being said burning at 4x with a newer 16x burner on 8x Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim media should provide good results. I'm going to go out on a limb and say, either your burner is older, or your PS2 is. That's the most likely explanation for why your games work better burned at 1x. Or it's the Riteks. It's almost certainly one of those three things.
