hi for some reason when ever I try to use ac3 audio on a dvd it ends up muffled and has very low volume I normaly extract the audio in virtualdub or tmpeg and convet it using besweet or ffmeggui to mp2 for this reason, that was fine untill I tried to convert a couple of XVIDS they returned errors and crashed both virtualdub and tmpeg so I ended up using divxtodvd it managed to convert them correcting a few errors along the way the quality was OK but the abilty to use a few filters durring the process would have been nice but the main problem is it outputted the sound as ac3 so I'm back to my main problem bad ac3 sound so is there a program that repairs xvids so I can continue to use virtualdub and tmpeg or does anyone have any idea whats up with my ac3 conversion
I use dvdlab to build dvd's from the output files from tempg
and nero to burn

Hi philraz,
First of all, you are talking about turning XviDs into DVD.
This is a forum for turning DVDs into XviD (the opposite).
But I can help you with AC3 audio :^)
I Demux it from DVDs using DVDDecrypter, or from AVIs using Nandub.
I increase its playback volume using AC3Filter.
To make an AVI, I will use AC3 2.0 directly if available, but from AC3 5.1 I first extract to stereo WAV using BeSweet, normalizing to 100% (0dB) and using 'normal' compression.
This will usually gain-up the WAV ~10dB or 12dB ;^)
For action/adventure movies (gunshots/sirens/explosions etc.) I will use 'heavy' compression, which reduces the crazy >120dB+ digital dynamic range to ~90 or 100dB, much nicer playback (and you can actually hear dialog, between explosions).
Using heavy compression will usually gain-up the WAV ~15dB.
This top-quality 'improved' WAV will now make fantastic VBR MP3 for use in AVI.
Now what's your problem - you have AC3 you want to use as AC3, but the volume is too low?
I have encountered this and don't know who is trashing the AC3s, even how they do it - it is the simplest thing to extract audio tracks from DVDs perfectly...
Are you trying to convert XviD AVIs to DVD with AC3 2.0 audio?
You are then at the mercy of the person who encoded the AVI audio, LoL, most are pretty bad.
If you are encoding AC3 2.0 from a bad source, you must try to gain it up (MP3Gain) or whatever you can do to improve it, first.
I would be tempted to extract whatever the audio is to WAV. You can then just use it on DVD (LPCM audio) or you can use it as source for Nero Recode, for example, which will encode it AC3 2.0
Let me know if anything's helpful here, or more specific questions if I'm not 'getting' it...?
Regards

Hi,
To extract AC3 audio using DVDDecrypter, use IFO mode.
Enable stream-processing, identify audio track you desire, highlight it and 'demux to separate file'.
For other help running TMPGEnc on XviDs you should ask AVI to DVD forum (this thread is useful for audio advice - you will not be accused of multi-posting...)
