Hello Computer Geniuses,
I have a great computer but it just died right when I was watching Bleach (anime). Here are the specs.

Mobo: ASUS P4P800-VM
CPU- P4 800 FSB 2.4 Gigs
Everything else basic
PSU 400W dirty but working

Heres the story. Everything was running fine until I noticed that my CPU was going up to 99 C at full load. I found out my plastic clip on the cpu was broken and I replaced it. It was tough to get the clips out and I used my teeth and i found out I severed like 3 copper lines above the CPU. (Yes I'm retarded)

But it worked fine for 3 months and the CPU never went above 40 C.

Than it died. I tried to power it up but I don't think any power is going to the Motherboard. Theres a light on my Mobo that lights up green when you connect a PSU to it and it doesn't light up. I bought a 500W PSU and I tried it but no green light.

I think my Mobo is fried. Would my CPU and HardDrive be fried too? Ram? Please help. Thanks.

You did what??? No offense, but maybe you shouldn't be working on a computer. I would recommend taking it to a repair shop to have it diagnosed and repaired. Hope its somthing simple.

Most components in a system are single point failures. When they go, they go alone...they do not take out other components. A power supply surge failure might fry all kinds of components, but not in your case.

However, I definitely need to know...what 3 copper lines/wires are you talking about?? I would guess that your mobo is just fine, it's your CPU that fried....but I'd need to actually see what you did to help out on this one. Take photos and post if you can.

Yea I admit I was stupid trying to get the clip out with my teeth. But it was the last clip, it snapped, I had been working on it for an hour, and frustration is a bad thing lol.

Its a standard Asus P4P800-VM. On the front of the botherboard is the CPU and copper lines running parallel above the CPU Plastic Clip. Those were the lines I severed.

I was just concerned b/c the Mobo I have has a green status indicator light that turns on when you connect it to a PSU. When I did it with a brand new one, it doesn't light up.

In either case its a moot point b/c I just ordered a brand new Asus A8N SLI Mobo.

Thanks for all your help. I'm glad that its probable my RAM and Hard Drive are still intact. You guys rock.

Yea, there was a good deal for an Athlon 64 3700+ -San Diego Core for 220 so I got that. This is my first time with AMD so I'm hoping it'll be good.

I have two more questions if you can indulge me.

Since my CPU is now 64 bit, should I get Windows 64? Or keep running XP Pro?

Second question, I bought a totally clear plastic case, is there anything special I should do for it like screws, etc?

And is it ok for the back of the motherboard tough the plastic case since its all plastic? I know with Aluminum it shouldnt... Just wondering, thanks.

Stand far and clear of Windows XP 64, believe me I'm telling you from experience, trying to find drivers that are compatible with 64 is a freaking nightmare. Stick with Windows XP Pro, unless you want to experiment and do a dual boot with 64 on a second drive. And please for heavens sake, try not chew on your processor this time...LOL, What kind of diet are you on...... I just downed 3 molex connectors off my powersupply, man you talk about delicious!!!!!!! Come on, you gotta laugh at that one..........
