I am a novice at the internal issues of the personal computer so I would be grateful for some help.
I have just bought a new hard drive for my old computer and installed it within the tower, gone through the bios setup and then in the manual I have got, says before I install windows i have to partition it,but what is the disk you use to do this.
Any help much appreciated.

I would highly recommend that you stay away from Windows ME, but if I can't persuade you!! :)

The Windows ME will boot from the CD if the system is set to boot from the CD drive. In the boot menu, choose to start the system with CD support, not Install Windows ME. I think it's the second option?

There, you will get to the DOS prompt. Type in FDISK and hit Enter.

Say Yes when asked if you wish to support large volumes. Saying No will allow you to install Windows 95...eh, but who's going that far back?

You will have four options to choose from. Just create a partition, if there is already one, set that partition to be active. Once that is done, exit FDISK, and restart the computer. Again, choose to start the system with CD support. At the DOS prompt, type in "format c:" and press Enter. (without the quotes!)

When it's done, restart the system, and this time choose to Install Windows ME.

It can't install until it has a formatted partition to install too. What's the screen say when you go to install?
