ok well this is the deal. My friends computer boots up fine but when she actually gets logged in non of the icons show up. they are just the white file. when we try to get into something like for example itunes nothing happens at all. She leaves it on for long periods of time sometimes so im guessing maybe it just over heated cuz it kept shutting on and off all day. we also tried some more stuff like restore the date through the start menu system restore and windows cant load the file needed to open the system restore. any help would be appreciated.

try using the xp setup disc to do a restore, this will allow the windows installation to stay intact and will not loose any data what so ever the only thing lost will be updates and security fixes.

Please refer here for instructions http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

I agree. Start with the above suggestions. Sounds like there may be some corruption issues. You could also be SEVERELY infected with virii or spy/adware. If the above solution does not fix the problem, wipe the drive and start new.

Good luck.

I disagree.
You could have hardware issues, and need to set everything up properly first.
Open the case and clean it out. Ensure all fans and coolers are in tip-top shape.
Ensure your BIOS is setup 100% properly.
Log onto Windows as Administrator (main computer-builder administrator).
User accounts may have restrictive policies etc. that are causing you grief...
I am leery of 'restores'. Most peoples' Windows installations are rotten-rotten over time, and need fresh reinstall badly.

Yes this is always good advice :^)
I can spend AGES disinfecting computers (and the results are not always guaranteed).
Try Lavasoft AdAware, Spybot S&D, and (at uttermost need) HijackThis!
I say that because HijackThis! is powerful advanced tool, I use it almost every day but run your scan with it and post result, so someone (me?) can help you interpret...
Reinstalling is easier (but of course presents its own unique challenges, LoL)
