Good day everyone,
I am about to just throw my pc away and turn to mac(everyone probably has the same feelin when using windows). Ever since I bought my new pc, I've had several problems regarding the DVD-R/DVD-RW. It kept crashing around 54%,98%. At first I thought it was Nero (cause I was nero)..nope wasnt nero, then checked my drivers for the dvd writer, wrong again... Thought I had one of those faulty writers (checked on forums) so I bought a new dvd writer(NEC Nd-3551A). I was so happy when the first cd I burned worked, turned out I was fooled because the next ones all died.... At the end, I just blamed windows and noticed that my *cough* pirated *cough* version of Windows xp pro was at fault because I could only get the important updates regarding security, but I was missing out the imapi stuff ( i think ).
My question is, is it windows? anyone knows where I could get a working version (except the legal way :p) of windows that actually lets me update more than the security stuff.
Or is windows not to blame here?

Any Computer Store or site will sell you Windows XP Home Edition, OEM Version for around 100 bucks when purchased with a
Non- Peripheral Hardware item. Example, a Y Splitter power supply cable is fine. Do yourself a favor & BUY what you need. Legitimate Software. Ever heard of the Old saying: "You get what you pay for"? I'm not being a "smartie" or anything, but the truth is the truth. Being "Legit" is what it's all about. Anyone, I mean anybody anywhere can Expect Problems when using Non-Legitimate Software, period.

No, you should be a "smartie."
What do you expect if you download a pirated version of an OS? It's not even like you're downloading a program that's like 1.23 mb. You're taking an OS. I wouldn't mess around with that. I'm a car enthusiast as well, and I wouldn't skimp out on certain things when I'm tuning it.
You also shouldn't post this kinda stuff here.

@Mr_Pink,
Thanks for the back-up. I mean, you ARE agreeing with me, right?
"skorpio81" should NOT be posting these things about pirated software here. Nevertheless, my point is: Always EXPECT problems using Illegit Software of ANY kind.

Thanks Mr_Pink,
I believe in using Legitimate Software. I also believe that a LOT of cases with people have so many problems, it is Directly related to using Illegit/Pirated/Free Software. Not all, but many. Look at IHoe's post for example.

I actually disagree about buying a legit windows this far after initial release. $100 is way too much, especially now that it will be replaced soon. For now, back up anything important and format and re-install windows. If you do not want to keep on installing SP2 every time you re-install windows, slipstream it into the install CD.
Instead of buying Windows, just look for a cheap PC with Windows XP Home pre-loaded (this way rather than buying Windows, you are buying a PC and getting Windows as a bonus-same but different). They range from $100 to $250 and come with a monitor and printer. I get a new PC every time my printer is out of ink ($75 for ink alone or $100 for a new PC with a new printer and ink...). I then sell the PC for the same price that I buy it, but I keep the printer (I only get it for $100, not much more). These sales are usually hard to find though. You almost always find one after Thanksgiving, but you also see them in June or July.
If you do not want to replace your PC, buy the new one and get the Windows Key from it. Then use the key on the PC you will use. Use 1 PC to go online and the other, never connect to the internet...NEVER!!! Since the Windows will be legit, you can update it as much as you want. However, get an anti-virus and a firewall before going on-line.
You should also download and use Firefox for everything except Windows update, though you can use windowsupdate.62nds.com for firefox. Internet Explorer is pretty bad when it comes to security. For firefox install extentions like Adblock and noscript. Also set cookies to ask you everytime. This way you can choose to allow certain things and block others. I never set anything to "allow", but I set some to "allow for session". This clears them out after I close the browser. I also block Java almost everywhere and use the "temporarily allow xxx.com"
If you are forced to buy Windows, maybe go for an older version. I do not know if you play a lot of PC games, but if you do not, there is not much software that requires WinXP or Windows 2000. Actually Windows 2000 is a very good choice. You can find it for about $50 and it is the same OS as Windows XP Pro. The only difference is that Windows XP comes pre-loaded with every driver and DirectX 9, but for 2000, you have to download drivers when you install some components. DirectX isnt a problem though because it usually comes with whatever you have that needs it. If you get W2k, download the drivers for your modem and other components (Graphics card, I can't think of anything else, but I do not have much more on my PC).

Open up Internet explorer, go to tools/manage add ons. You will get a list of services (don't forget the drop down window to uncover more). You will see Genuine advantage tool. Just disable, apply & reopen IE.
That should do the trick!

You are more than likely missing one of the critical driver updates. Seems to me that if you have enough money to buy a NEW DVD writer, you have enough to buy a legal copy of Windoes XP.
Skip the basics - bite the big one!

@ gatlin01, the method you mention sometimes does not work, it never worked for me. The way I suggested is a lot simpler.
@ smsmike, the cost of a new writer is a fraction of the cost of XP, not the best comparison, me thinks!

No you know what it is? When yeah people d/l stuff like torrents you think its ready espicially Os? Well ya wrong. A lot of times peeps will frick it up just to piss you off. So the best thing is d/l it and go through it yourself to make sure all files are there. I have seen d/l torrents on machines that come in for repairs and they are totally buggered. If you carefully go through it and know what yeah doing. It will work. Trust me...my one machine is a server box with a cough cough windows 98 version and runs marvelous after I tweaked the hell out of it and slip streamed the unnofficial sp3 into it. Its been stable and the best part is no activation required. Hell I cough cough a win pro sp2 that never asked for activation and doesnt give me one lick of problem after I replaced the missing dll files and added a few of my own shit too it. See ya newbs got to learn to study what ya d/l. Not just slap it in and pray..LOL!
