It depends on your PC, processor, and memmory at which speed you can make a good backup with. My PC is fairly new and always updated so 16X works just great and take less time for me.

I got swap magic and keys. But your saying even though I burn them at 4x the laser on my PS2 will still burn out because they are 16x DVD-R. Or do you mean the laser on my burner will burn out.

I have Sony DVD-R 16x with a white top. I've been told these are good quality.

burn speed doesn't matter. PIF levels do

I've read posts by Daniel G that 16x DVD-R's give the PS2 laser some issues. I don't know firsthand, I use 8x TYG02's Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's. He's probably right though, I've read a lot of people have issues with 16x discs. Generally you want to burn at half the speed of the disc. I recommend getting some quality Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim 4x or 8x media.
86. Q. Where can I find good deals on legit Taiyo Yuden's and Verbatim's?
A. http://www.supermediastore.com Great List of Merchants locally, online, in the U.K., etc:

Parity Inner Failures. Other things scanning engines like DVD Info Pro and Nero CD/DVD Speed scan for are PIE's-Parity Inner Errors, and POF's, Parity Outer Failures. Those don't refer to the inner and outer ring of disc. I don't know exactly what they mean, but the more of the them, the more likely your disc will skip, lag, freeze, or fail to boot. Good media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim will have very few of these if burned correctly.
93. Q. How can I tell if my burned disc is of good quality?
A. Well besides you using quality media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim's, you can use a program called Nero CD/DVD Speed to measure the quality of your discs. It measures POF, PIF and gives your disc a quality score based largely on it's precoreded Media ID. In my experience that's the key component to getting a good quality score. A crap manufacturer like CMC Mag won't maintain a great quality score over time, even if you follow all the advice given on AD for successful burning. You don't need to know exactly what PIF's and POF's are, just know the more of them, the more likely your disc will skip, lag, freeze, or not boot at all. When people say CMC Mag or Memorex media is crap, that info is based largely on many Nero CD/DVD Speed scans by burn enthusiaists on CMC Mag media that have yielded terrible quality scores. Try it yourself and see. You can find Nero CD/DVD Speed here: http://www.cdspeed2000.com/go.php3?link=download.html Plextor DVD Burners aren't compatible with Nero CD/DVD Speed. For their DVD Burners you need to use a program called Plextools, which does about the same thing as Nero CD/DVD Speed minus the quality score. You can find Plextools here: http://www.plextools.com/download/download.asp
