Ripping DVD question

I am new and curious...is it possible to rip a DVD with either a regular CD-Rom or a CD burner? Or do I have to use a DVD-Rom? Thanks.

Yep u answered that one.

Only a dvdrom can read a dvd so in order to rip it u will need a dvdrom.

Transfer rates are alot higher on dvd's so u need a high read rate - dvdrom.
Cd's are a lot lower.

However there alot of cdburner/dvdrom combo units on the market which can do both.
I started with a combo unit as I was limited to space on my pc, but I upgraded and got a seperate dvd rom, I got better rips with a dvdrom and less read errors.

Also technology, software, specifications prohibit cdroms from reading dvd structure.

Alrighty...that's all I need to find out. I have this older ancient DVD-Rom I got like 2 years ago or so...that will have to do for now. Thanks for the help! :o)
