Hi guys

I've read loads of guides saying that if you want to encode a DVD to Xvid so that it will fit on 1 cd-r, use H.264 for Xvid because it compresses better, but if you want it to fit on 2 cd-rs use mpeg-2 because it's more detailed. Some also say that you should also use H.264 for Xvid to fit on 2 cd's if the movie length is over 3 hours long. Right.

So, my question is : Should i use H.264 or mpeg-2 for Xvid for a 40-45 minute TV episode, for a target size of 400 megabytes? (this size includes the audio (lame encoded vbr (~40-50mb)))

Also, same question as above, but for target size 450 megabytes?

Thanks guys,

Blighter

Sounds like you mean h.263 or MPEG quants. h.264 and MPEG-2 are completely different.

It really comes down to personal preference. MPEG might be too blocky for you. etc. Also you aren't limited to just those two. There are plenty of CQM's (Custom Quant Matrix).

Yes, that's what i mean lol! CQM looks a bit advanced to me - i don't really understand that much about video encoding so i'm sticking to the guides for the moment!

Would you recommend encoding a 1 minute clip with both quants and seeing the difference for myself? Is the difference fairly noticable?
