For some reason my catalog of 600+ dvd backups are all becoming unplayable! I have not checked all of them, but the last 10 I have checked have all exhibited the same problems. All the backups were decrypted with DVD decrypter and compressed with DVD rebuilder unless they were dvd-5s in which case they were simply decrypted and copied. I have tested several discs that i know to have played properly when first burned, and they are also unplayable. The discs all suffer from image breakup similar to what you get when the disc is badly scuffed as well as audio distortion. Ultimately, the disc crashes the player. On my standalone player, the discs crash hard enough to shut my dvd player off and send it into recovery mode. When i attempt to rip them back to HDD with DVD decrypter i get tons of I/O errors. They are unrippable. I've got countless hours and hundreds of dollars invested here and am starting to really panic. Any idea what's happening?
Most are on Ridata G04 inkjet printable discs.

correction, majority of collection on ridata g05 8x discs
burned at 4x.
all discs are scratch free of course.
tomorrow i will comprehensively clean my drives in the hopes that it will help, but i'm not optimistic. my originals play flawlessly.
i just tried another disc. oddly enough, when i play through a chapter, it plays fine. scan through, no problem. i start thinking, ok, 1 for 12. but if i skip back and play it again, the same chapter is completely wrecked. Does this make ANY sense?!

Your media looks OK and your burn speed is fine.
Are you using pretty paper labels on your burnt DVDs? If so this will cause problems.
Try them on a few different standalones. I have found elcheapo Chinese no name DVD players to be the most reliable for DVD playback.

further info:
no labels
tested random samples from the beginning:
cheapo imation discs all check out fine
ridata g04 4X silver discs all check out fine
the first of the inkjet printables is bad and every disc from then on is bad.
i will try another standalone, but the one i have has always played these discs perfectly. and i mean the particular titles i've tested. now, my pc, my powerbook and my standalone all crash when the discs are played.

forgot to mention, all titles burnt on the same drive. pioneer dvr107
is this dye-rot? they have all been stored in sleeves, no exposure to light or high temps. i'm going to cry myself to sleep now.

plan4 - Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I'd love to see a scan of these. Sounds like you have a nice collection built up and I would like to know the longevity. Keep us informed.

as far as longevity, these are discs that were burned and played perfectly a few months ago. doesn't that seem unreasonably fast?
just checked the most recent burn, probably a month old. same g05 8x ridata, same burner. plays fine. tomorrow i start working backwards through my collection to see what i can salvage.

I don't use dvdinfopro, but you might want to adjust the speed to the speed you recorded at. Otherwise those are horrible scans and I can see why they don't play. Do another scan of one you know plays to be sure your drive supports this function. Although I believe the pioneer does.

i've never used the scanning software before. i started out scanning much more slowly. it returned very similar results, but was taking an eternity. for the sake of getting a picture up, i stopped it around 70% and restarted the scan on a faster speed. i don't know how accurate the scan is, but i can tell you that the discs are unplayable now.
i moved this thread to the media forum, where it probably should have started out. the new thread is:
