Thanks to the tutorials above (amongst others), forwarding the ports in my Belkin router was a fairly simple process..

..it would be if I could figure out all this static IP crap.

My ports are configured. But, my ports are not open since I have a dynamic IP, so I'm wondering if someone can help me with this (I've been searching all day).

If I have a static IP, then does this mean that I need to disable DHCP in my router? If so, I really don't understand how you configure your router to pick up on your static IP (I can't see any options for setting this up).

I did try setting a static IP with DHCP enabled. Seemed to be communicating with the network, but not with the internet. So, I changed the IP to something that was outside of the 100 IPs reserved for automatic IP addressing, but still no luck.

However, the other machine is still running on automatic dhcp. Do I need to change this to a static IP too?

As a sidenote, my computer seems to pick up the same ip everytime it is switched on. Do I really need a static ip, or is my problem something else?

Could do with a helping hand here

Forget what I said, it seems to be working now. Tutorials above are good. Thumbs up.

I set a static ip gain on my local machine after realising that the dns appeared to be different to what it was before (either that, or I need glasses). I checked this after reading the tutorial above (again!) and realising that the dns should be the same as the router address (correct?).

Download speeds have increased slightly (not greatly, but I'm guessing this is down to the download in question), 1 port is open (did I read that Bit Torrent only uses 1 port?) and the rest that I configured are set to closed rather than stealth (I'm guessing this is because they're not being used currently?)

If I'm missing something out, feel free to let me know...

Otherwise, feel free to delete this thread ;)

Yes, you need to setup a static Ip on each computer on your network and they all need to be a different Ip for each.
