Need expert suggestion on software that converts DVD VOB files to AVI

My new found hobby is to edit the home videos and digital photos into a nice movie. When I travel, I usually purchase DVD that captures the best sceneries professionally. I would like to know what is the best software that I can use to rip the DVD VOB files into AVI files without losing the quality. So I can then use the AVI files for editing and integrated into my home video. I have tried several software out there and found the video quality dropped dramatically. Any help or suggestion is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

avi conversion shouldnt lose any significant quality unless you are using compression like DivX XviD etc. VirtualDub mod is a good free program but just remember that an uncopressed AVI file is about 1gb per minute of movie you could try a lossless compression like huffyuv that will give you about .5gb/pm but why edit them as avis leave them as mpegs and use an mpeg editor
