So I bought a new Asus A8N-SLI Mobo with an AMD 64 3700+ san diego.

I was so excited about this new toy but when I installed it, I keep getting error codes.

At first it wouldn't detect my Hard Drives so I used an Old cable and than it wouldn't boot up windows.

I went into safe mode, and that worked so I tried to do a fresh install but it wouldn't let me.

I called Tech support and they said it needed a 40-pin 80 conductor cable. So I went out and bought one and when it runs through BIOS is still says "No IDE 1 No 80 conductor"

What do I do??

I checked everything else, Vid Card geforce 6600 GT checks out, Ram checks out, Hard drives checks out...

Please help.

Go to ASUS' website, and download the latest BIOS update. Install using a floppy.

If it still gives you probs, send the board back for a replacement.

Thanks for the fast reply.

I checked the Asus website and I found the Bios Upgrade. But it says I should also upgrade the chipset first which is about 39 MB. Should I disregard?

And a noobish question is, how do I flash the bios from floppy? I'm too spoiled with winflash i guess. (assume I don't have windows or anythihng)

Do I unzip it to floppy and boot from it? Let me know, thanks.

And is it also possible to just burn it to CD and Flash Bios from that? Thanks.

Ok

I believe I've figured out how to flash BIOS from Boot with CD.

It turns out my Bios is so out of date, that it doesn't recognize my CPU which I'm hoping and praying why I can't start windows b/c of compatability issues.

Anyways here is the bios I need. A8N-SLI Bios version 1014

But under it it says I need to upgrade my Chipset. But I don't think I can flash a chipset from boot? Any advice?

Well, technically there's no such thing as "flashing a chipset"...what that means is grab the latest version of the chipset drivers. All installation packages will require you to install them from within the operating system.

vspede,I don't know what your talking about???? Your processor should be recognized by the stock bios the board came with. Now when you upgrade to a dual core processor, that's where you need bios 1011 and up. Your doing the right thing by upgrading your bios it's just that I don't understand why a single core wouldn't be recognized with stock bios 1002 or whatever bios your board came with. Please take some time to read the manual, especially if your talking about flashing the chipset...geez

Yes, actually After 16 whole hours of researching and reading, I fixed it. Turns out, the whole problem was a bad cable that they gave for my Hard Drives.

Bought a new 40 pin 80 conductor cable from Compusa and that fixed it.

Also turns out the No Ide 1 80 conductor cable is b/c IDE 1 is my DvD Rom drive so thats not a big deal.

Bios was v 1013, a little out of date but not the problem. I feel really moronic now b/c I spent the entire time thinking it might have been any of the components or software but it was actually just 1 stupid cable.

Thanks So much for the help guys though. You gave me a lot of tips.

There is a special jumper on the motherboard that you pull out that flashes that bios. Pull It Out and update your drivers
