How would i go about re-converting my Avi (Xvid) files to another form of Avi with a different compression/audio codecs.

Im having a lot of troubles with the Xvid codecs and i cant create DVD's due to it (I think?) the reason i get this problem is unknown. All i know, most of my Avi's are Xvid compressed, the ones that had different codec compression worked Sad

Please help

Dan

I recommend tracking down VirtualDubMod (not VirtualDub as that cannot handle XviD...). That will let you recompress the AVIs VIDEOSTREAM into another type (eg) DivX.

?But are you saying that you are going to recode XviD to (maybe) DivX just so that you can recode them to MPEG2?

Maybe try another DVD authoring app if the one you are using is not allowing XviD, What one are you using now?

Hi lads, cheers for the replys. Im using TMPGEnc Plus 2.5 for encoding the mpegs and Tmpg Dvd author to author them. Im having a lot of trouble converting the XviD AVI files on my computer, the encoder seems to produce stop errors at random places when encoding and also it likes to just completely crash on me.

I've used various other programs such as, Vso Converxtodvd (which stops 1/8 of the way in almost everytime), Mainconcept Encoders (both the mainstream one and the H2.. one, crash errors are reported everytime) Trial versions of Pro Coder and Nero Vision Express, crashes again :(, erm i've used a few others in the past too, Win AVI - this works sometimes but the sync is always out, Also Video cleaner pro and other one-click AVI-to-dvd softwares.

The authoring when the mpegs are in m2v/mpeg2 format is fine its just the first part, enooding to it.

Xvid compressed Avi's usually cause these type of errors (above) to occur regularly, i just thought by convertin the XviD to another compressed format - DivX etc, the problem might not exist. - Could someone praps provide me with a detailed tutorial/help to convert the AVI to a different type of compression.

Cheers again

Dan

XviD is MPEG-4, DivX is MPEG-4. Change the FourCC from XviD to DX50 and you are done.

No reason at all why you should be having problems just because it is compressed with XviD though.

whilst I have to blatantly agree on a technical level, I have found that trancoding XviD can become a bit flakey if you've had a varity of different DivX and XviD codec builds installed on your system over time. I really hate those people who cry "reinstall windows" but there is a lot to be said for a nice clean system....

Having said that, I've always found TMPGEnc one of the best encoders. Try fiddling with the VFAPI priorities setting all to ZERO except the one needed, Or maybe try running the original AVI through DIVFIX to get its index rebuilt, it may help if the problem lies in the AVI itself...

Okay cheers for the help lads ill try out Div Fix. Its also on my system somewhere ill have a look for it :) lol. I did however reinstall my system not that long back, i didnt format the partition but did however do a clean install! i might do a format sometime soon, maybe this would sort the problem out once and for all (my computer has 2 partitions with seperate OS installs).

I blame the problems not just on XviD but also my system itself. My computer has a tendancy to install plug and play devices on the same IRQ number thus uses the same memory allocation as other devices/drivers do.

Is there maybe an application that can reinstall devices to seperate the IRQ slots, i know that if i turn off plug and play on my motherboard it shouldnt install things in PnP mode. I cant find this option to turn that off though :(, my motherboards a K78SX (Asrock?)

Here's a selection from my System Information "Conflicts and Sharing" box

I/O Port 0x00000000-0x00000CF7 PCI bus
I/O Port 0x00000000-0x00000CF7 Direct memory access controller

I/O Port 0x000003C0-0x000003DF SIS Processor to AGP Controller
I/O Port 0x000003C0-0x000003DF NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200

IRQ 9 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System
IRQ 9 SCSI/RAID Host Controller

IRQ 17 Conexant AccessRunner PCI Arbitration Device
IRQ 17 Conexant AccessRunner PCI ADSL Interface Device

Memory Address 0xA0000-0xBFFFF PCI bus
Memory Address 0xA0000-0xBFFFF SIS Processor to AGP Controller
Memory Address 0xA0000-0xBFFFF NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200

I/O Port 0x000003B0-0x000003BB SIS Processor to AGP Controller
I/O Port 0x000003B0-0x000003BB NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200

As you can see i have a few sharing conflicts, im sure this must have something to do with it along the lines?

Thanks again for the help

Also sorry, memory allocation:

0xA0000-0xBFFFF PCI bus OK
0xA0000-0xBFFFF SIS Processor to AGP Controller OK
0xA0000-0xBFFFF NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 OK

These are shared!

Dan,

Others may disagree, but I think there shouldnt be too much wrong with any of that.

It makes sense that the AGP Controller and GeForce are on the same allocations because they are part of the same device tree. The same goes for the Conexant AccessRunner Devices. And the PCI bus needs DMA. so I dont think any of that would be causing your problems.

Do you have DivX installed on your system? This may be conflcting with XviD as they are both MPEG4 decoders...?

Oh dear! I didnt mean to make you reinstall stuff - I suggest a fix tool such as DivFix or AVIFix first to see if that helps.

And another note, Most XviD codec builds will handle DivX aswell so you dont need both codecs installed.

Let me kno how you get on..!
