Hi Guys, Im new to the PS2 modding scene. I can do my xbox no bother but im pulling my hair out at getting this ps2 to work. I have a black slimline one. Ive read loads of pages and threads but cannot find out which version i have.
If you can point me in the right direction id be very happy.
I have installed the plastic tools onto my PS2 slimline. e.g. A,B,C.
I can load swap magic fine, and that can load PS2 original games.
I have tried downloading a backup of my original games : Battlefront 2, and devil may cry 3.
These have just turned my discs into coaters!
I download them and extract them to obtain the ISO. I have tried burning without the patch and with the patch, and both dont work.
The program i used to patch was ps2_pal2ntsc_yfix.exe.
This may not be the correct program to use, but i have also ripped my orignal of tekkan 4 onto my pc's HD using DVD decrypter. I have used the ppf-o-matic3 but think i had the wrong patch. I obtained the patch from megagames.
I burn the discs at 1x. using nero , burn image option.
dvd decrypter gives me this error
Coding and then
unable to lock volume for exlclusive access
reason access is denied.
I am completely stuck on where to go next as swap magic just wont load any of them.
I am also using DVD-R discs.
im sure htis must be a burning problem, but if you can please help id be grateful.
Thanks,
|

This process is not nesscessary to burn the disc. And also Xbox laser is good for not as great media. PS2 laser is picky. Try getting some 8x Verbatim DVD-R discs, and burn at 4x. Done that myself and have successfully burnt 75+ PS2 games.

Im using imaation discs. They are 8x however my burner is a pioneer 105 DVD-R burner. The max speed is 4x. So i can never reach the top speed of 8x speed.
When i insert the backup i press the X or Square button and it just has the
NOT A VALID PS2 disc
at the bottom.
I look very carefully at the LOAD PROGRAM display
And it does flicker when I press the button. So it does look like its trying to work. Just nothing boots up.
Do I need a patching program other than patch o matic?
Do i need to patch everygame?
It burns OK with Nero, but like i said above, DVD Decrypter doesn't like it one bit.
If its not the discs the only thing i can think of it will be is the tools. Ill have to open up the ps2 and put tape on on section c, (as from a thread i read about the tape and tissue method)
Thanks,

Imation are notorious for very bad quality dye. Buy some 8x Verbatim DVD-R discs, and burn at 4x and I'm sure it will work. You will notice a big difference in any other games you may have burned with those discs.

Yep, I also agree that the imation discs are probably whats giving you problems. Also, most games require no patching.

Get some Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim's.
86. Q. Where can I find good deals on legit Taiyo Yuden's and Verbatim's?
A. http://www.supermediastore.com Great List of Merchants locally, online, in the U.K., etc:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/buyerguides/buymedia.htm
106. Q. Where I can find top notch Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim media locally?
A. This is somewhat of a crap shoot. Big manufacturer's like Fuji, Sony, and Maxell have at one point past or present payed Taiyo Yuden to manufacture media for them. The big companies slap their name on the label even though the discs were manufactured in Japan by Taiyo Yuden. These discs will always be made in Japan. Authentic TY media isn't made anywhere else. Even if it says Made in Japan on the label, there is no gauruntee of getting authentic Taiyo Yuden media. You could still end up with Sony or Fuji media codes. Hence why I said this is a crap shoot. Places like Comp USA, Office Depot, Sam's Club, and Staples will carry Made In Japan branded discs. Again there is no way to know for sure from the package whether these are authentic Taiyo Yuden's. If you don't want to risk getting non TY discs, you can find 50 packs of Verbatim in the afore mentioned chain stores. One other alternative is the Made in Japan High Grade Maxell DVD+R's. They will say Made in Japan on the label and "High Grade" as well. These are excellent media. Remember when using DVD+R's, it's best you have a burner that supports booktyping/bitsetting, and a v.4 PS2 or later. Much thanks goes to kivory666 aka "docTY" for this information. He is indeed the Taiyo Yuden master. The best place to get authentic Taiyo Yuden media is from reputable online vendors like http://www.supermediastore.com http://www.rima.com http://www.meritline.com or http://www.newegg.com

Are they a reputable site? There's a lot of fake TY's out there, that's why I linked you to list of reputable vendors.

ebuyer aren't bad... but http://www.svp.co.uk/index.php are better in my opinion.. next day delivery for only £2 or so more.. and have loads more better quality discs to choose from like Taiyo yudens etc. Might want to give them a try in the future.. less hassle than ebuyer!!

Hi again. I got the discs. They dont work. I tried burning smackdown vs raw 2006 at 1x and 4x.
It does not work.
My guess is that I have a dodgy swap disc version:
As the cd version loads fine. But the DVD version needs booting from the cd version.
If this is normal can you let me know???
The other problem it could be is tool c.
I accidently pushed it down too much. So much that its not flat its past being level, and below the surface of the plastic.
Can you give me any clues on where I am going wrong.
I burned smackdown vs raw using Nero. (the burn image option) as i downloaded it as a backup to my original copy.
If all else fails ill open my ps2 and at least try :
http://www.geocities.com/pstwoslimline/tapetissue.htm for the C tool part.
As I think this may be the problem....
Im asking for your professional opinion..... If you need any more info, just ask.....
Thanks,

Try rebuilding the game.
10. Q. What does rebuilding an iso mean?
A. It means that some games 4.36-4.38GB's may need rebuilt to work with Swap Magic. This isn't true for ALL games over 4.38GB's and differs on a game to game basis. The main purpose of rebuilding is to shrink the game's Table of Contents (TOC-the size of the game) in order to boot it with Swap Magic. The TOC for the Swap Magic DVD is around 4.37GB's. There is no need to rebuild games if you have a modchip. Another purpose of rebuilding is to make games run smoother. Usually the size of the game after rebuilding is smaller, but not always. Some games have dummy files used to beef up the TOC and help them run more smoothly. A good way to lower the game's TOC is to overwrite a large dummy file. If you are having trouble getting a backup to boot, and you're sure the media isn't the problem, try rebuilding the game.
11. Q. How Do I rebuild games?
A. With Nero and Isobuster (works as long as no single file is over 2 GB's): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/197949 With CD/DVDGen: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/210515 With Expert (Gnie's new rebuilding tool):
Gnie's PS2 Auto Rebuilder Tool Download (Thanks to 3DLuis):
http://www.alucard.cc/ps2/ExPERT_v1.03.rar
Instructions to Gnie's Tool ExPERT From Paddymail:
Here's how to use it.. it might not work for all games though.
Open the program.
1. Select the Shrinker_ps2_psp_CdDvd5_iso.epi on the plugins drop down list.
2. Select the iso you want to rebuild.
3. Click extract LBA.
4. Click extract file and wait for it to finish.
5. Click rebuild file and wait for it to finish.
6. Click rebuild LBA.
7. Burn the new iso with Nero or DVD Decrypter as usual.

Not always. A lot of people have made a straight burn for this game. One universal rule for burning PS2 games is that what works for one person, may not hold for another.

Yes MoRoS is right gfoggin, I had the same problem. The SwapMagic discs are fine its just that Tool C is a pain. Trust me though it's way easier to open your Slimeline up and tape down the button that Tool C trys to press on.
Another advantage of doing this is you won't have to leave your PS2 tray wide open every time you play a game. The less dust inside the better if you know what I mean.

WOW - ITS WORKED!!!
I opened the PS2 and noticed that tool C had slid between the chip and another part. It was not even touching the sensor. Ive taped it up, and its working great.
I have two backups of smackdown now!!!!
Devil may cry 3 also worked.
But battlefield didnt.
Thanks very much for helping me!
Now im going to glue the pads at the bottom of the ps2 back on.
THANKS AGAIN!!!!!
Thanks,

Ah awesome news gfoggin, glad to hear it! That Tool C really needs to go back to the drawing board as it just isn't very good and doing it's job.

Yeah those tools can be tricky I heard.. also have to play with lid up... that's why when I did my bro's for him I fitted a new aftermarket fliptop for him.. very easy to do and had him running in about 10 mins.
Glad you got it sorted :)
