Why don't people use the cheaper mod chips that are out there? What are the pros and cons of these chips? I know that old adage "You get what you pay for", what is wrong these mod chips?

Modbo 2.0 ($13)
Muppet Chip ($23)
Neo 12($15)
Neo Bright ($20)
Ripper IV ($15)
Ripper IV Plus ($15)

If I were you, just go with Swap Magic w/ slide card if you don't want to spend a lot of money. If you want to go for something a bit easier, buy a Lusifer chip for you PS2 (http://www.sonypsp.gr/catalog/index.php?cPath=25_26). It's solderless and only costs about $14.99, and the swap magic discs SHOULD cost only about $19.99 (so buy them from a different website than the above).

Solderless mods have had different effects on people. The cheaper ones (like the one I bought) have different effects; for some people (like me) they burn their PS2, while for others they work flawlessly. The only thing with these chips is that you have to be fast; after you hold the eject button for 2-3 seconds to eject, you only have 5 seconds to swap the CDs.

If you want a REALLY good solderless chip, then get the DMS4 EZI Lite (http://www.modchipstore.com/DMS4-EZI-Lite-Solderless-ModChip-Play...). You just have to push some pins into your PS2, no soldering, but if you got $10 more you can get the better, PRO version (http://www.modchipstore.com/DMS4-EZI-Pro-Solderless-ModChip-Plays...), which is better for homebrew.

It's Festivus for the rest of us!

The reason the cheaper chips suck is they are poorly made with limited funtionality. The DMS 4 Pro SE and Matrix Infinity may cost a little more, but you're getting all the quality and know how of two of the most respected teams on the internet, The Matrix and DMS Teams. These two chips are the best for the PS2, will give you the ability to play backups like originals, with no swapping/resetting. If you have the money to get a chip, then go with one of those two. Swap Magic is a good product, but it doesn't compare with a chip. Once you make the switch, you won't go back to disc swapping anytime soon. This should answer most of your questions: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/304534

So, from the 6 mod chips that I listed above, the problem with them is that they will burn my PS2?

ok let me add the best and most important reason
FREE FLASH UPGRADES!
the DMS4 and Matrix Infinity have them.
The others you mentioned do not as far as i know.
These upgrades come out about twice a year and will update your features on the chip, and best part is they are a free download. You then burn the CUE file you get to a CD and run it in the PS2

and let me add that Swap Magic, although it does work, it really
just a joke to me. I used it for a while until i could afford a modchip and i have not used that PS2 since. Now it collects dust in the closet. The mod chip has sooooooo many advantages over Swap Magic that i will just list a few so you get an idea.

free upgrades, no swapping, no rebuilding or replacing dummy files, no problems with screen cut off using games from other regions, no problem using AR Max (with DMS4 Pro) for cheats with your back up games.

I couldn't agree more. Swap Magic doesn't compare to a modchip. If you have the money for a modchip, there's no reason to get Swap Magic. How many posts have you seen on this site about, "I have a Matrix Infinity or DMS 4, man I wish I could go back to Swap Magic." I've never seen any.

mod-chip vs. swap magic

the advice given here is solid. cheap modchips are no good, if u wanna save money get swap magic, at least it wont fry your ps2 nor will it void your warranty.

but if you are a dedicated gamer with some money, definitely go for a good chip like matrix infinity or dms.

it all comes down your gameplay time and interests. if you are an avid gamer who likes to go online, u will soon start cursing swap magic.

i personally use swap magic myself but i only play ps2 for around 3-4 hours a week. i bet you most ppl on this forum play that much in a day. since i play very little ps2 and have never played online, i don't even have a network adapter, so swap magic suits me but whether it will suits you will depend on your circumstances.

You guys have convienced me to go with a mod chip, but I am leaning towords a DMS4 EZI. I am not good with solder and I think I can do much better just pushing in connectors.

Hold up. Many people butcher their PS2 when trying to install a solderless chip. They cost about $30 more than solder chips. For the same price, you can a pro to install it, and there is no chance for error. Use of one of the reputable installers posted in my FAQ to install a DMS 4 Pro SE, Matrix Infinity, or Crystal Chip 1.1.

I don't underatand how people butcher thier PS2 during install. All it takes is pushing the sockets and connectors in. What is so hard about that?

Tokijin is correct. although the solderless option may seem real
appealing because it is a "do it yourself" install i would spend the extra few bucks and get the soldered in chip. But the choice is really yours to make. If you do it right the EZI Pro will be a great
chip with all the features of the soldered in DMS4 Pro
But if you mess it up you are out the money for the chip and will have to start all over with a new one.
Remember that when you get this chip, either soldered in or solderless, you will need to go and download the latest flash for it before you start playing back ups.
You can get them here
http://sksapps.com/index.php?page=dms4.html
for either the EZI Pro or DMS4 Pro you want the ToxicOS V0.41
Just download it, burn the CUE file to a CD and run the CD in the PS2

i know everyone telling you to spend even more money just doesn't sound right. But we are only trying to help you make the best decision. If you get a solder in type DMS4 Pro, spend the shipping and install money, you will have a great gaming experience.
I also forgot to mention that if by chance you have a slim PSTwo that you really should look into getting a laser fix installed as well. You can buy them on the net. This is a must for the V12 and a good idea for V13 & V14 consoles as well. It keeps your laser from burning out.

your ps2 motherboard is a fragile thing.

even installing a solderless chip can damage it, if you don't believe me, go to ps2 general discussion forum. it is a graveyard of failed attempts of installing modchips, solder and solderless ones.

i wish you good luck with your modchip which will be installed by a professional installer.

take care.

No, if you get a DMS4 Pro chip you need the ToxicOS V0.41
If you decide on a DMS4 Lite you would get ToxicBIOS V1.4
Those are the 2 newest flashes i know of.
I am not even sure what those DMS Fkash downloads are as the OS and BIOS i mentioned above are the official flashes for the chips.
