Lite On SHM-165h6S - OEM newegg - problems

this burner i got as an OEM from newegg.com. i plugged it in suprised that it said it didnt need any drivers.
it didnt burn... illegal disc error. im using imation discs. they always work, i have only had about 3 out of 300 not work on my sony burner. so maybe this drive is super picky about media, but it seems stupid that it just decides that the media is no good.
im not sure, maybe its nero. i updated the firmware and it still doesnt burn.

your disks arent very good quality and you are writing very close to the edge try a smaller file

yeah try better media with your new drive Taiyo Yuden and or Verbatim are the top choice ,and try burning at 4x

This is not an issue with cheap media. I have the same drive and it does the exact same thing with Verbatim, Imation, Sony, HP, and Memorex DVDs in DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL. There is a firmware upgrade available at http://www.liteonit.com.tw/ODD/English/e_downloads/e_firmware_dvd...
I tried it but still no luck. I am going to return this but unfortunately I got it from ZipZoomFly and they will only exchange it for a like model. Hopefully I just got a faulty one. By the way, it will burn Lightscribe LABELS and CDs, just will not burn DVDs.

That is weird as I just bought the same burner, and so far no coasters (crossing fingers). I find it fast, only thing is the lowest speed I find I can burn is at 6x. Anyone know why that is the lowest? (I am used to 4x, so I am wondering is that ok?) Does anyone think I need to DL any drivers? I can burn a whole DVD with at least 12 approximately torrents and no problem whatsoever. Should I just leave it alone? TIA

After two years of no problems, I started having burning problems with a Lite-On 1633S, thought it was a media had outreached the drive and decided to upgrade to SHM-165H6S today! It is having burning problems also. HS0E firmware and Verbatim DVD-R 16X (MCC 03RG20) bought at Sam's Club....believe I have the latest of everything.....but it says ILLEGAL DISK
Here's my log from the last burn --- just burning a data disk no less.
Any right direction would be beneficial....

I am having the same problem as 'audiofile'... I just got an SHM-165H6S and I can't burn below 6.0x with Alcohol 120% or Nero. does anyone know a solution to this?

by the way, I am using sony DVD-R media... and I can burn them at 2x with an LG burner on another computer, so I know it's not a problem with the media

mhogryd: I do not know what to tell you. I still can not burn (<) below 6.0x with Nero, I have not tried Alcohol, yet. Perhaps, I will and report back here and let you all know. My assumption is that maybe this is as low as it gets with this burner? What kind of CDs and/or DVDs do you use? I have had good luck with Verbatims. They seem to hold the music as well as data (so far, time will tell if they really do).

Even though this won't fix your problem, your drive needs to have the DMA enabled (ON), instead of being in PIO mode. Try this:
To ensure your drives are operating in DMA mode: (1) Control Panel, (2) System, (3) Goto the Hardware Tab, (4) Device Manager, (5) IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, (6) Right Click on Primary IDE Channel --> Properties, (7) Goto the Advanced Settings Tab, Make sure both drop down boxes say 'DMA if Available', Click OK,(8) Right Click on Seconady IDE Channel --> Properties, (9) Goto the Advanced Settings Tab, Make sure both drop down boxes say 'DMA if Available', Click OK, (10) Reboot.
Something else y'all can try:
Go into your Device Manager, find your burner, and right click on it. Choose "Uninstall" from the menu that opens. After it uninstalls, reboot, and let Windows detect new hardware, and install a new driver for you.
If you installed the hardware yourself, did you double check your Master & Slave settings? I think the burners like to be the Master, and the Rom drive, be the Slave. Unless they're in a Dell. Then you set them to "Cable Select".
If it's been awhile since you did a defrag on your HD, you may want to try that too. The files may be getting fragmented so bad, that it's causing a problem, trying to gather them to burn.
This is just some ideas to try. Maybe one of them will help you.

DELL needs "cable select"? I've always used master-slave settings on all my drives so that they're where I want them to be. Since I'm having burning problems also, can you give me some background on where the "cable select" for Dell comes from?

I can't give you a link straight to it. It's something I've read on forums, from people that owned Dells. I think I also read it at one of the firmware pages, while trying to help a guy with a firmware update.
After doing a quick search, apparently some work with the Master/Slave settings, and some don't. It may have to do with what Mobo you have. Here is one I found to show this........

The first guy to answer the poster, says his Dell came from factory, with it set to cable select.
These are from a quick search. If you'll do a search, you'll find more.
As I said, it may have to do with which mobo you have, but I have definately read that Dells prefer cable select setting.

I do not own a Dell, I made this computer myself. I did use Master/Slave before you mentioned this, JVC, and yes, it does help, but the speed still seems fast (6x), do you not think? So, again I think this is the slowest speed this burner has.

I don't think 6X is fast, unless you're burning 4X discs. I burn all my discs at 8X. The discs are 8X, so I'm burning at max speed. They all do very well......
My burner is supposed to burn at 16X (I think), but I've never bought 16X discs. One of these days, I'll get some and try it.

JVC you just made me think (scary I know), but I do not think I have seen anything lower than 6X speed on any medium (DVDs or CDs), unless I have been not paying attention.
I am using Verbatims (Can I assume you use JVC's for DVDs and/or CDs?) as I mentioned in an earlier post. I am curious what are you using your DVDs or CDs for? I am archiving my Flac music so I am being as anal as possible. I have always read that you should burn as low as possible when burning ANYTHING, and I do mean ANYTHING.

audiofile... i've been making some burns with my lite-on at 6x and they seem to work perfectly... as well as anything I ever did at 1x or 2x with other burners. I know it's bizarre and scary, but these burners may actually not need to go lower than 6x :)

No, I don't use JVC media. I tried it once, and it sucked. I get my username from having JVC A/V equipment. It doesn't suck! :o)
I've been using Maxells (MIJ) and Sony (MIJ) media, for dvds and cds. I burn movies, concerts, DTS cds, and dvd-a copies. All burn at 8X, on 8X media, with no problems.
I've seen the term, but don't know exactly what it is. What is FLAC music?
My burner is a LiteOn. I use Nero for burning.

Yeah, you can PM. In the PM, maybe I'll understand better what you mean by use DTS.
There's really nothing special about using it. You just basically need a home theater system (surround sound system), with a DTS decoder. Most systems have that now. Helps if dvd player has DTS also, but as long as your A/V receiver has the decoder, you should be ok. DTS is 5.1 or 6.1 surround, so you need the speakers to listen to it too.
You can get inexpensive systems, with tiny speakers, and not many inputs, but work ok. Look for Dolby Digital and DTS logos, on front of the receiver and in specs.
You can get a pretty decent system, fairly cheap, from a pawn shop, and hope it lasts. Some people get very good deals this way.
You can go ahead and buy a good system brand new, and get what you want and need. These run from entry level to very high end. Three quarters to two thirds of the overall budget should be for speakers, the most important part. They are where you'll get the actual sound from. You can change receivers, and hookup to same speakers, and won't notice much difference in sound. You change speakers hooked up to same receiver, and notice a definate difference in sound.
I've gone way off topic here! My point is: you're not gonna get DTS from just anything. You must have the right equipment for it. I'll answer what questions you have, that I can answer. Just send the PM.
